SSD Prices In A Free Fall

Hard-disk drive vendors point to the higher price of solid-state drives as a reason to keep on buying hard drives, but as Bob Dylan sang, "The Times They Are a -Changin'." The advent of 3D NAND has become a game-changer for the storage industry by increasing SSD capacity and dropping SSD prices.

By packing 32 or 64 times the capacity per die, 3D NAND will allow SSDs to increase capacity well beyond hard drive sizes. SanDisk, for example, plans 8 TB drives this year, and 16 TB drives in 2016. At the same time, vendors across the flash industry are able to back off two process node levels and obtain excellent die yields.

Excellent. This will eventually allow to get a 1TB SSD drive at an affordable price. I've already got a Samsung 850 Pro 512gig I bought in Oct for $349, now going for $261 on Amazon. Perhaps I'll be able to get the 1TB 850 Pro for less than $300 before the year is out

Newegg had a 250GB 850 Evo for $100 yesterday. I paid $80 for my 840 Evo 120GB. Good trend

It is indeed excellent news. Hopefully in the near future I'll be able to replace all of my spinners with SSDs of the same capacity!

It's doubtful that 1TB SSD will ever be around fifty bucks...

The storage size for the SSD still on the small size, even if it is more than enough for most people. HDDs will be around for awhile, while SSDs will move to the M.2, PCI-E, or similar format for speed.

Got my EVO 850 (250GB) several months back for $100. I think we will see 1TB drives for the same price in the not so distant future.

I dont know if Ill ever replace my data drive with an SSD. All that is on it is pictures, videos, music, etc. Stuff that doesnt really depend on instant access times or high data throughput. Though this is nice to know for OS drives. Ive been wanting to replace the spinner I have in my desktop system that I am currently using as my OS drive with an SSD of at least 240GB.

These estimates seem a bit exaggerated at this point. SSD is still lagging in terms of capacity, and in my household we only have a handful of devices using SSD. While it's become more widely-adopted for sure, HDD's are not "doomed" until SSD capacity goes up and prices plummet. Still too expensive for an SSD.

No, HDD's are not "doomed", they're just relegated to backup drives now. Great for holding or backing up large volumes of data.

And I actually think the estimates are pretty good. Again, I bought a Samsung 850 Pro 512gig SSD drive in Oct for $349, and now it's $261 on Amazon. So in less than a year the price dropped nearly a hundred bucks. That's pretty good. And with the technology getting better by the day, you could see even better price drops as cost production decreases.

BTW you could get a 256gig (240gig) SSD drive for as little as $85 bucks from Amazon, probably cheaper elsewhere.
