Power Options - Add or Remove "Dim display after"

Add or Remove "Dim display after" in Power Options in Windows

information   Information
The display can use more power than any other part of a PC. Reducing the display brightness level can help extend your battery life before needing to recharge.

The Dim display after setting under Display in Power Options specifies how long your computer is inactive before your display(s) dims.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the Dim display after setting under Display in Power Options for all users in Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to do the steps in this tutorial.

Note   Note
This could be handy if you wanted to set this how you wanted, then remove the setting to prevent other users from being able to change it in Power Options.

If you did not originally have the Dim display after option available, then it means that it is not supported on your PC.

Instead, your display(s) will automatically dim by the percentage set in "Dimmed display brightness" exactly 15 seconds before what is set in "Turn off display after".

You might see how the free program f.lux may work for you for this. It's pretty good. :)

thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn't look to be what i'm after, which is something that will dim the screen x% when the system is idle, and return to full brightness once the screen is touched again, without ever turning off the screen... gonna do some more google searching, there has to be something out there like that... thanks again.

found a free, simple program - shadenow... so far it seems to be a winner and does just what i need: dims the screen x % after x amount of time, both defined by the user, and returns to full brightness, or wakes up, the moment you touch the screen...

Perfect. Thank you for posting back with it. :)

I've been searching for a solution to this problem (Windows 10 though), and I just wanted to add that this solution won't work (assuming part of the desired goal is power saving). The ShadeNow program "dims" the screen by darkening the color of the LCD. It does not appear to dim the backlight. If one has an OLED screen this may work, but for most of us with backlit LCDs this probably isn't going to achieve the desired result.

I tested this by exploiting my screens lovely edge lit backlight bleed =P
