Most welcome. I think Superfly did you the best thing though. Play with Classic Shell and you should be able to make it look and act like you want. There is even a 8 gadget pack if you're into using them. I know all the security hype about them but haven't experienced any issues myself.

These things on the side of the screen. Many XP, Vista and 7 people are into using them. Never mind if you've never used them. Thought maybe you had them before since you wanted 7 or XP so bad when trying to get your laptop going.

I will say one thing, apart from thanking you guys again, if Windows 8 doesn't work for me, or if I remember (and have time) the next time I decide to format my lap top, I'll come back and give it the last college try to install Windows 7 on the lap top by setting the password in BIOS and then disabling secure boot, as Superfly mentioned earlier...

Another thing, I want to apologize in advance because you won't be seeing me much on the forum. I mean, I will drop in from time to time, try to give back, try to help others if I can, but I'm not really a computer expert guy, I just sort of deal with problems as they come, passionately, as you've noticed.

Note to self --> Try to Install Windows 7 next time. Just to see if it's doable!

Just to inform guys that I have installed Classic Shell and got my Start Button back as I know and love it

It was really the easiest thing I've done in this entire thread/for the last 3 days

I was going to remove the store, but after checking a tutorial online I just decided to not bother with it, and I just Unpinned it from the taskbar... I mean, it's a small little thing that doesn't really affect me any and doesn't waste any resources.


I actually don't see much else that needs to be changed. I mean, everything else pretty much looks like and works like Windows 7. I'll probably run into more things that have to be changed later down the road, but I'll deal with it when/if I get there.

If there's anything you guys have in mind that I've missed, let me know.

And I was gonna mark this thread as "Solved", but I think I'd rather leave it open, because we did not solve the Topic of this Thread, we did not get Windows 7 installed. So what I'll do is leave it open and then come back at some point and try the last idea that Superfly got to see if we can get Windows 7 running on this machine...

Not even in order to keep it, just to see that it can be done!

Hello, everyone. I just bought a new Acer laptop and I was facing this exact problem the whole day. What I found in this pushed me in the right direction, but somehow, when I wanted to install Linux Mint, I just got a black screen, and nothing happened, no matter how long I waited. My boyfriend just told me to install Ubuntu, because there's tons more support for that, and it worked at once. So I tried to boot Windows 7 after having installed Ubuntu, but this again did not work. Boot menu just acted like I have USB plugged in. I was trying stuff out for hours until one friend told me to just try to switch boot mode. It was on UEFI or something like that, and the other option is 'legacy'. I did this, and could boot Win7 right away. Now, the problem was with partitions on my hard disk. So I bothered once again with this, until the other friend told me to boot gparted from usb. On this, I could manage this disk space, and I deleted everything that was on the disk, and tried again. A friend came to me and messed around with this Windows installation, where this problem with disk space kept coming up. It was something about a partition style being wrong, something to do with 'gpt'. So he just deleted all the partitions again, and made new ones. And only then did the installation work. I hope this helps someone.

Too long, didnt read: try switching boot mode from UEFI to Legacy mode, and then deleting everything that you've previously tried with your HDD, and make new partitions. Worked for me.

Well, call it what you want, but when you get Linux Linpus, you get really desperate. Especially if you're a noob like me, so just overrunning everything might be a lot easier than anything else one might try to do.

Yea, my laptop stays home so I believe in the KISS principle when it come to local passwords. If I'm robbed then I'm SOL. If I die and someone inherits it, don't think I'll care then.

That happened to me once, IIRC I removed the CMOS battery and it reset the password...

I'm still using Windows 8, and I don't think I'll be returning to Win 7. I mean, I even read that Windows 7 may be obsolete and not supported anymore in a year or two, so there's really no point in trying to stay with it. I did that with Win XP, remained with it until the bitter end. Well, not this time.

I haven't had any issues with Windows 8.

I like that when I delete something I'm not asked the question, "Are you sure you want to delete this? Yes/No?" It saves me extra clicking, haha.

I see that for the better part of the decade they haven't managed to resolve the 255-character pathname thing. So that still interferes with my deep nested organization. Sometimes I have to makethingssticktogether to save characters, or even remov som caracters t save space whn nming my flders... That sucks!!

One more really weird issue I have, and I don't have it on my other lap top which uses the same IP but runs on Windows 7, there are some websites that when I try to visit them with my new Win 8 lap top I can't access them. I get a blank page, nothing. But I can access them normally with my Windows 7 lap top...

I tried looking up a solution, but I didn't find anything, and I have no idea how that is possible. I'll probably format this lap top soon because I suspect it may be a virus or something that's making that happen...

Oh, and about 2 months ago I lost sound to the lap top. Like, there was no sound coming from the speakers, but there was sound coming when I connected headphones or some external speakers I have here...

And suddenly a few days ago I disconnected my headphones in order to connect my external speakers, and suddenly there was sound coming from the lap top's internal speakers. So weird...

have you tried using another browser to access the sites that don't show? The sites you are trying to access may be using an old protocol. IE11 has a compatibility mode that you can try. Check out Compatibilty View in Settings.

Yup, I just tried one of these sites on Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer. And then I added that site to the compatibility mode in Internet Explorer and tried again. Nothing works, they all return a blank page.

But when I try to access the site with my Windows 7 lap top, it opens normally.

Go figure...

Hi! I have the same problem as justme: I've bought an Acer Aspire with Linpus Linux. I've tried to install Linux Mint, as you said, but the laptop doesn't work without the USB flash drive. I've tried also to install Windows 8.1 from USB but the laptop doesn't recognize it (<No bootable device>). I am desperate and I really don't know what to do. I've read all your 28 pages, but I didn't find a solution.

I would be grateful if you could help me with some advice. I'll appreciate!
