Solved Malewarebytes and other av apps want run

Action center tells me windows defender isn't runnning. I go to services and try to start defender and it won't take.

Also trying to run trend micro housecall and it has been running for 27 minutes and is still showing... listing auto entries..it is stuck at 3%.

Can't get Ad-Aware Anti virus to run even the first time.

It seems like you might have a virus that is disabling the ability to use anti-malware programs. Try using malwarebytes Chameleon: https://www.malwarebytes.org/chameleon/

What anti virus program do you have installed? With 3rd party programs installed, Defender will not turn on.

Agree with Karstenes. I had a similar problem with Ad-Aware. I did a System Refresh just to be safe.


See if HitmanPro and Adw Cleaner will run.

Chamelon run a little then scanner stopped. SFC did not complete. 1-adw finished and hitman pro finished. Still can't run malewarebytes. Going to try in safe mode.

When you ran the sfc /scannow command and it did not complete, was it because it froze or was there an error message?

If you are still having problems, a clean reinstall of Windows may be in order.

This is what I got from sfc.

In the same elevated command prompt run this::

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

It may appear to be stalled at 20% but let it run.

Once completed, run the sfc /scannow again and reboot the computer.

Did HitmanPro find anything ?

Agree with Nuccii, I recommend a Refresh or Reinstall on Win 8.

Hitman Pro only found tracking cookies. I was able to run Windows Defender and it found this: Trojan:Win/Wysotot.gen!A

Should have said this is Win 8.1 Pro. I found the malewarebytes wouldn't run because it said the trial had expired, even though I dowloaded the file today and did a reinstall. I found it would open a window in safe mode.

Combo fix said it wouldn't run on Windows 7. Started to do a clean install last night and my dvd player took a long time to load Win 8 install disc. Think I will swap it out. When i upgraded i got Win 8.1 from the app store so I guess I can't get win 8.1 back unless I install Win 8.0 first, or do I have a setup on my hd?

When you are finally set in, create an image back up with Macrium Reflect Free on a regular basis. Saves a lot of headaches if you have problems and have to reinstall

Whenever you install programs, do not select Express or Recommended installs, choose Custom install, that way you will be sure you get what you wanted and no garbage like Trials and Toolbars etc.

Look at Option One of this tutorial:

It lets you download an ISO of Windows 8.1 that includes Update 1 and you can use it for a clean install using your product key.
This was just released by Microsoft. I saved as an ISO and created a boot-able USB.
