Kapersky Internet Security 2014 + 2 PCs = 2 Broken PCs :)

Last night I installed Kaperskey Internet Security 2014 on both my PC and my Laptop. I ran it for about 1 hour and quickly decided I hated it for the following reasons:

- Too many notifications (even when I seemingly turned them off in settings)

- Had to confirm connection to home WiFi network every time I logged in

- Three web browser extensions, all IMO unnecessary:
a. Safe Money
b. Virtual Keyboard
c. URL Checker

- Every time I ran some of my own batch files to cleanup Windows I had to confirm. No way to turn this off.

etc.

When I tried to uninstall Krapersky on BOTH machines I got a fatal error which locked up my computers forcing me to reboot. When I got back in to Windows my keyboard AND mouse were not working (remember, this is both computers).

I tried everything I could think of to fix the kb/mouse. I tried restarting in safe mode, Windows Startup Repair, System Restore, different hardware on different USB ports, SFC /scannow, etc. but nothing worked. So at 3 AM last night I proceed to re-install fresh copies of Win 8.1 on 2 different computers! LOL. :)

Anyway, I am fed up with anti-virus programs nowadays. They are almost worse than having an actual virus! :) They hijack everything in your computer and affect both the user experience and performance. I am so fed up I have reverted to just using Windows Defender and Firewall.

Ideally what I would like is an antivirus that really does nothing till i tell it to scan, then it can find the most number of threats. I would like it to basically do nothing until I tell it to scan. (I used to use an older program called Comodo Cleaning Essentials which didn't run in the background, you just started it when you wanted to check for threats, however, for some reason it doesn't work anymore and IDK why.)

Is there such an anti-virus program out there? If so, please let me know. :)

Thank you,

~Jan

Agreed, Kaspersky is the pitts. Built in Windows Defender does the job efficiently without hogging all the resources. I would not turn off real time protection though because if you do, you will be left wide open to attacks.

Easier solution first. Try System Restore on each and restore them to before you installed Kaspersky. Solution 2. Search Kaspersky's website for a removal tool. Option 3. Use Revo-Uninstaller to uninstall Kasperky on both while in Safe Mode. After Revo-Uninstaller removes Kaspersky, run SearchEverything and type in Kaspersky in it's seach box. Delete everyything it finds and empty the recycle bin. Now restart your pc. Thanks for the tips. :) Yeah I should have done something like that before I went all out and re-installed Windows. :O

As far as System Restore, I tried that. Even went back 1 day but the keyboard and mouse issue was still there. I think it was an issue with the USB drivers. I tried to change my BIOS to enable legacy, I tried copying usbXXX.sys from a friend's Win 8.1 machine to mine, etc. but nothing worked.

I think perhaps Krapersky hijacked the core system drivers to protect them (?).

Apparently System Restore doesn't handle mouse/kb drivers?

As I stated earlier, I also booted into a command prompt and ran SFC /scannow which reported no issues.

Check in your bios/uefi and see if it shows your keyboard & mouse listed. If it doesn't, click on what ever key it say's to load either "Optimized Defaults" or "Default" values, then hit the F10 key to save the changes and see what happens. When you reinstalled Windows, was it a upgrade install or a clean install ?

Install it again and after restart uninstall it with Removal tool to uninstall Kaspersky Lab products

I wonder, why have not use used only Anti-Virus then instead of KIS, which includes those extra features?
Also not sure, but mostly you can choose, what do you want to install during a setup or disable it later.
Like AVG Free, where you have to uncheck everything like linkscanner and then disable email scanner.

I am finding that all these AV companies are overthinking their products way too much instead of keeping what is most important in mind, they add all this other JUNK to their programs instead of just worrying about the product itself which is antivirus.

Since Windows 8 has been released all antivirus products have just gotten worse, I've tried them all, Norton, Bitdefender, Eset, Avast, and even Kaspersky and every one of them in one way or another does not play well with Windows 8 and up.

The only combination that seems to work without any problems whatsoever is using Windows Defender, Windows Firewall and Malwarebytes Pro.

I mean it's gotten to the point where you cannot even trust one of the highest rated free antivirus Avast! because there software was installing adware Avast Antivirus Was Spying On You with Adware (Until This Week)

No intention to start a debate, but I have used Kaspersky for years without any issues. Like any AV, it does use resources but KIS 2014 is very light.

The plugins like Safe Money, URL checker, etc can be disabled if the user prefers. I have uninstalled Kaspersky using the Unistall Tool from Kaspersky which completely removed from my system.

That said, my Kaspersky license expired 1 month ago and I am currently using Windows Defender and Malwarebytes free edition as a backup scanner. So far it is excellent, but the only advantage on resources I can detect is very slight decrease in startup and shutdown time.

As often stated in this forum, Windows Defender is normally adequate for the average home user but commercial AVs are not always villans.

Kaspersky=SUCKS! 4 times now I've had to do a FULL reset (Win8) because of Kaspersky. Speccy+KIS is a nightmare. KIS gets corrupted and takes Windows with it. The last time (couple of weeks ago) it was a power flicker. TV went off, came back on. Computer shut off. When I turned the computer back on, I got popups about avpui.exe. I then had 3 instances of KIS in the tray. Their uninstall utility didn't work. I did a dirty rip. No good because Windows was corrupted too. :(

KIS 2014 is doing very good in my personal laptop with Win 8.1. It delays start up time for few seconds like any other 3rd party AV but after SSD upgrade, nothing of that sort could be noticed further. I have no add-ons like virtual keyboard, safe money etc enabled , so no adverse affect on browser startup and function. No frequent notifications come up for me.
If it messes up my system, I'll get it uninstalled. But till now no such instances ever happened to me fortunately. I had purchased it after reviews of KIS 2014 being lighter on system than its previous versions.

Security products tend to cause problems like that. Windows kernel is way too secure thanks to patchguard and such and security companies refuse to upgrade their products accordingly. That is one of the reason, why I do use any realtime security and my PC is problem free, no more crashing, games and soft unable to run.

Just like any other SW, AVs should be balanced between computer "power", system and security needs. If one has need for enhanced or extreme protection, than computer itself has to match that requirement but also to be ready to "suffer" with it's drawbacks. With increasing threats, comes increased need for protection and that of course can tax system. Some of that can be alleviated by being careful and informed. Perfect balance is pretty difficult to achieve.

I think you should try F-Prot. That is what I use and it works great and does not hog system resources. you never know its there until you need it. The way an Anti Virus program should be.

I always recommend GData Internet Security. Has never let me down so far and it's generally trouble free. Ok, no software has no bugs at all but this one is very well designed according to my experiences.
