Installing Windows 8 Core with embedded key

Where can I get a clean copy of 8.1? I'd like to install 8.1 directly

And now it is working like normal. It only works like normal every now and again. Would Event Viewer show me anything useful, like the driver crashing or something?

Okay I may have come across something. It stopped working again and I found this in event viewer. It says a multitouch device reported inconsistent contact information.

Something that is interesting is that this happens at the same time as an event that says "Touch Hardware Quality Assurance verification succeeded." Event ID 267

That's hard to do if all you have is an OEM key. The only legit download other than MSDN won't accept OEM keys. I get mine via MSDN but I have a subscription.

I wish I knew what that meant? About all it tells me is there is an issue with the touch pad, but we already know that. About all you can do is google it, or wait for somebody with some expertise in that area to post.

Here's my device manager. It is showing two unknown devices and a touch screen and my touchpad. Currently the touchpad is working, the touch screen is not working. Could they be interfering with each other? I may pull the bottom off and check all the connections but if device manager notices them they should be okay right?

I read though this whole thread again. I'm going rehash some of it.
This PC originally came with Windows 8 right?
Then you had issues that required a reinstall, what were they?
You say it wouldn't work with Windows 7, what issues did you have there?
On this last install you again had issues, Windows update etc? Was everything working correctly before upgrading to 8.1?
If you have unknown devices in device manager I would look for the drivers for that hardware. Maybe the touch screen is messing things up.

As I mentioned in a PM, you may be able to create a Windows 8.1 USB flash drive to install from if you did the Windows 8.1 upgrade via the MS store.

See here: How to Create a Recovery USB Flash Drive in Windows 8 and 8.1

Option Three shows you how to create an ISO using the ESD-ISO tools after you did a store upgrade.

See if you have a C:\ESD file and if yes, follow the instructions in the link.

Does that mean you have C:\ESD? If so that's good news indeed.

I'll try making recovery media but I'm worried the problems will be carried over.

Yes, it originally came with Windows 8

I was having blue screens due to bad RAM. That was the original reason to reinstall

The issues with Windows 7 were battery life and driver support.

Everything was working correctly before upgrading to 8.1

I tried searching for the drivers but Windows update couldn't find them. I'm going to see if I can figure out what the devices are.

If you mean via the ESD folder, that is not recovery media. It's a full Windows 8.1 iso that you will create.

OPTION THREE
To Create a Windows 8 or 8.1 ISO File from "C:\ESD\Windows" Folder

It's a hidden folder by the way, just in case you didn't know. You'll have to set "show hidden files and folders". and maybe uncheck the "hide protected system files", to see it.

You may have to get the drivers from HP.

The driver guard is a drop sensor. It will signal the hard drive to park the heads if it senses that you dropped the laptop. That likely shows up as a utility on the HP site not a driver. Same thing for the Wireless button driver. I think that's tied in with Windows 8's airplane mode. It lets you turn the WIFI on off for places where its restricted from being used. On my ASUS its listed as Wireless Radio Control utility.
