I want to upgrade my VAIO laptop SVS13's HDD to a 256gb ssd. it has Windows 8.1 on it, and what I want to do is backup only a couple files but move most of my data from my old booting HDD that I'm using now. Would this process I'm describing work? So I would basically take out my hdd, put it in the enclosure, put the ssd in my laptop, install Windows using a USB drive (I have my own pro key, so I won't be using the recovery partitioned one if tis works), install programs/drivers, and copy/paste selected data from the enclosure.

This is the SSD I want to buy, though if there is anything better in this price range, please tell me. I'm not sure which enclosure to get, so I need help with that too. I've been confused that whether the HDD will die quicker or something after reading other threads.

It should work, why not ? Just few things to do first, make sure you collect all the drivers needed, do not connect now secondary drive until OS installation completed and make sure AHCI mode is set in the BIOS. Other than that there's nothing different from OS drive being SSD instead of HDD.

What drive are drive are you referring to as secondary, do you mean the regular HDD? Okay, that's not an issue to connect the enclosure to the computer after the new Windows install finishes if that's what you're saying.

How do I set AHCI mode in the bios? I heard the song bios is limited in doing this

You'll have to refer to the manual about that, if (and what I have seen from the specs) it has that option, than it should allow it.

Okay, so will there be no issues when I copy files, including steam games, from my HDD enclosure to the ssd? Could you or anybody else recommend me a good, inexpensive enclosure?

I don't think you can just copy installed programs/games and expect them to work on new system. Most of the time things like that have to be reinstalled. For Steam games, I think there is relocation tool, check with them about it, I don't have and never used any.
Which SSD is that anyway. If it's a Samsung drive, they have an utility to transfer system disk to their SSDs.

That's the one I have seen before, I think it might do the trick. If you are not hard set to install system from the beginning, you should look at this: http://www.eightforums.com/installation-setup/17083-how-migrate-os-new-hard-disk.html to migrate whole kitten caboodle to SSD.
