Solved Windows 8.1 loses wired internet connection

Same problem here - please help

I'm having the exactly same problem after updating to Win 8.1. After a few minutes my wired LAN connection goes "limited connectivity". I disabled the power saving option alread - no success. My laptop has a Broadcom NetLink Gigabit Ethernet adapter with Driver Version 15.6.1.2 from Jan 29th, 2013. I couldn't find a newer driver. A reboot typically helps but takes for ever.
I'd appreciate any hint - this is really a very annoying problem.

Newer drivers are not always better For some strange reason the driver that Windows setup "likes" is actually a Vista driver. The problem has been fixed in my computer using the driver at this url http://dell.to/16nfwMF which is a Windows 7 driver.

This is a very frustrating problem. I need the internet connection because my CAD program requires a permanent connection to the license Server. I'm close to throw the laptop out of the window (5th floor).

Hi. I had a problem with very slow network speeds after installing 8.1. In my case it was caused by the new version of Avast! 2014, which had to be installed for 8.1. Avast! automatically turned on a firewall. Since I already had a firewall running, a second one definitely slowed things down. I turned off the Avast! firewall and it turns out that 8.1 seems a lot faster than 8. I hope this helps someone.

Avast 2014 seems to be causing a few problems, their sandboxing is very aggressive and stops a lot of legitimate apps installing. During my upgrade to 8.1 Avast just vanished!

Also, as @seabass901 mentioned in another thread, try entering a DNS manually (I use Google's https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/ )

Try this...
1. Open Control Panel
2. Click Network and Internet
3. Network and Sharing Center
4. Click Change Adapter Settings.
5. Click the connection you want to configure.
6. Click change the settings of this connection
7. Scroll down to Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
8. Double click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
9. Click Use the following DNS server address
10. Fill in the DNS server info for your ISP.
11. Click OK and close all windows.

Old Win7 driver seems to resolve the issue

As suggested I went back to the old driver, which can be downloaded from above mentioned link from the Dell website. So I'm using now driver version 12.4.0.3 under Win 8.1 and this seems to fix the problem. I had no drop out any more for almost 2 days.
Obviously newer is not always better

This fixed my issue as well. I haven't dropped connectivity in a day.

I also have the broadcom NIC driver issue. Same NIC hardware in a Dell Studio XPS. Ever since 8.1 the NIC will not stay connected to the network. It's like all traffic just stops. I have a good IP address, but the computer can not be ping'd at all. I am putting on the for mentioned driver to see if that helps.

Open a CMD prompt as an Administrator. It must be run as administrator. To do so as an administrator, right click on "CMD" in the Metro interface, and choose the run as administrator option at the bottom of the screen. If you work from the desktop or start menu, right click on the CMD shortcut and run as administrator.
Type this: netsh winsock reset
Press enter.
Reboot your computer.

Same problem. I tried installing the old driver (btw, the above solution did not work at all for me) and just afterwards everything worked fine, no dropped connectivities (before, it happened approx. every five minutes), so I considered the issue solved. Next day (i.e. today), I started the laptop and again, no wired connection. Turned out, the ethernet controller was no longer listed in the hardware manager. Repairing or re-installing the 12.4. driver didn't help either, I had to do a system reset to before I installed that driver. Does anybody have any idea how installing a different driver can make the system apparently "forget" that I even have an ethernet port?

when i connect to network with wired cable and in bridge mode, after a moment i loses my connection. actually i lose my connection with modem and i can't access to modem config page(192.168.1.1).I think there is a program that detect my internet connection; I'm sure that there is no virus or misconfiguration.

Same problem. It's Sonys issue. Go to the Sony support website and you'll see lots and lots of problems with this issue. I'll never ever EVER buy another Sony computer.

If anyone is still having this issue I wanted to let you know I fixed it. I had COX internet and moved. Now I have ATT Uverse and I have not had a single internet interruption on my W8 computer.

Guess ATT's router was better/stronger/or newer than COXs. Dunno. That's not a option some people want to hear but it's what worked for me.

[SOLVED] Seems like there's thousands of people have trouble with Broadcom's NetLink Ethernet controllers new drivers for Win8.1. I was told they're currently working on this fix. In the mean time I uninstalled my current version of 15.6.1.2 and went to an old driver from dell HERE. Others have tried this and so have I and it's been working thus far. Broadcom BCM57788 LOM, v.12.4.0.3, A01

I have had the same problem with my system. Specs are in my profile but just for quick reference (and my temporary solution)

Asus N61JQ-A1 Laptop
Windows 8.1 Pro x64
8 GB DDR3 Ram
ATI HD5730 1GB Graphics
Atheros AR8131 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller

When I come out of sleep sometimes the ethernet port will disappear. I go into device manager, scan for changes, then it will find the ethernet port and reconnect.

This allows you to fix it without having to restart.

I did try removing the driver and letting it reinstall. I also tried the suggestion on the Asus site to disable turning the device off to save power.

I had this issue also'after update of windows 8.1. My wifi was working but couldn't use an internet connection via a cable ethernet. I resolved using the following:
1. Right hand side edge swipe
2. In the 'search'area write 'device manager'
3. select 'Network Adapters'
4. Select your ethernet connection device (mine was Realtek GBE Family Connector)
5. Select 'Uninstall' the device
6. Select 'OK'to confirm uninstall.
7. Restart my desktop. This installs the device driver again automatically. My wired connection shows up and is working.
8. Also... Right side edge swipe
9. Select the 'settings' icon
10. Select the network icon on bottom right hand side
11. Select my wifi connection
12. Un-select the option 'connect automatically'

Lastly the HP helpdesk (awesome group by the way), had me uninstall my wifi adapter and restart. This is to ensure I had the latest driver for my wifi.

After this all working well!
