You don't get Windows 8.1 Update from the "Store". It was released through Windows Update.

Have you checked Windows Update for new updates? If updates are listed, look for KB9219355; which is the Windows 8.1 Update. Allow Windows Update to install all the updates shown (if there are any).

Looking at your screenshot, I don't see anything that tells me whether you have it or not. One way to tell if you already have the update, is to go to the Modern (gotta remember it's not Metro) interface and look for a power button and a search button. If you don't see either one, start typing "Windows Update" (without the quotes). If you don't see the buttons and/or can type there, you probably don't have the update.

If you have Windows 8 installed, you get Windows 8.1 Update from the Store.

If you have Windows 8.1 installed, you get Windows 8.1 Update from the Windows Update.

How to know if you have Windows 8.1 Update installed? (see screenshots below)

Then you're good to go.

How in the world did you install Windows 8 on one partition and Windows 8.1 on another? Are both activated, or does this "count" as one installation? Curious ferrets may not have a need to know, but they surely do want to know. :)

i think it is considered as upgrade i got activated automtically. i like some of the features of windows 8 and like to keep it.
so now i have 4 systems in my laptop. windows 7 OEM windows 8 pro windows 8.1 pro and gentoo linux.
all booted from windows 8.1 boot menu.
only thng i did not understand is why twice the same update KB 2919355
both say successfully installed.
both are activated and i use same login information and account.

i don't now how to take a snip of metro menu screen else could have posted it too.

Welcome to Windows EightForums, roodap.

Snipping Tool in Modern/Metro:

Open Snipping Tool > Make sure it’s not in Capture mode by pressing ESC key > Go to metro screen, pop up menu, or whatever you want to capture > Hold down CTRL key and press PrintScreen > The screen becomes greyed out (capture mode) > Click, hold, and drag to capture. Press ESC key if you want to cancel or start over again.

So the key is: CTRL+PrintScreen to enter capture mode (Screen greyed out) and ESC to get out of capture mode.

After you upgraded to 8.1, did you then install 8 on another partition? With no problems of activation? I have been wondering if that was within the EULA, for I want to do the same.

Thanks, Hippsie! I wanted to do a snip of the Metro screen too, but couldn't figure out how to do it with the snipping tool, but now I know! Thanky, thanky, thanky . . .

It's good to know about putting Windows 8 and 8.1 on separate partitions of the HD, but I don't think I'll try it, even if it's within the EULA.

I've seen several folks say they've gotten KB2919355 two or three times; something to do with some small updates either not having been installed or needing to be installed after the initial update. At any rate, nothing to worry about; just go with it. :)

I didn't know how to do the Metro screen either until Hippsie explained it. Now we know.

You're welcome, Wynona, but just passing on what I've seen in posts. I actually copied and pasted it. :)

With this mishmash of 8 and 8.1 on this forum and not really having 8 all that long, sometimes I can't remember what was in it to help those that still have it. It's not that I have a bad memory > It's just that it's too short! :p

I was dual booting 7 and 8RP, then got 8 and db-ing with 8.1RP. Once I upgraded 8 to 8.1, I removed the 8.1RP off the partition awaiting W9, but that's going to be some time, so I may as well make good use of the partition. I'll have to ask one of the install kings if it's within the EULA, for one darn near needs to be a lawyer to read them. It is a system builder edition, so I think I can.

i had installed windows 8 a year back. after the constant nagging by the microsoft solitaire collection wanting to work properly in windows 8.1 i thought of installing windows 8.1 and did that last week.
both are in harmony. work fine . i can boot either of them. without conflicting.except the boot loader giving some problem i have put in a seperarte thread
i want to keep the windows 7 OEM default for want of the text boot menu which avoids unnecessary restarts for other system boot up.

yes thanks very much for the snip tool usage explanation i will try and post my metro desktop when i boot windows 8.1

the snip tool always stick to desktop.
i am not able to get a snip of metro menu.
i tried all options of snipping tool

then windows 8 must have been installed first. then windows 8.1
otherwise it may look at it as a new installation and activate other ways

Your toshiba satellite c855d is touch screen and you had to open on screen key board for the capture? The physical keyboard did not work?

To be sure, I take it you have two laptops then? That keyboard doesn't work either?

Are you sure you are using Ctrl/Print Screen? Some confuse it with WinKey/Print Screen, which is capturing a screenshot.

Hmm. Never had a laptop, but have used some briefly and worked on a few. I could be wrong, but the way I understand it is that usually there is an OEM driver/program controlling the keyboard, not the OS itself. Nothing in your manual is strange. Have you checked settings in Control Panel > Keyboard?
