Potential Slimtype BD E DS4E1S Driver Fix

Okay folks, I think I may have a solution for people who are having problems with their Slimtype BD E DS4E1S drives. I just ran into this issue myself today & I've been going crazy trying to find the cause. After a lot of googling, I found out the Slimtype BD E DS4E1S driver is actually made by Lite-On. It appears the drives may just need a firmware flash update. The Lite-On site appeared to be doing some sort of maintenance but, Lite-On DS-4E1S Firmware Downloads - Firmware HQ has the driver. Just download, extract & install the .exe file. I think the DOS file has the same result but, just a different method My BD drive is now properly reading discs. Give it a try folks.

I know this is an old thread and it's for Windows 8 but I'm having this issue and the Lite-On update didn't work. The only real change that my laptop (Asus N53Jq) has gone through in the last several years I've had it is that my computer-savvy father recently put an SSD to replace the old hard drive. Works a hell of a lot faster, especially booting up but now I've noticed this annoying problem!

After cleaning the lens the first time (microfibre cloth, no alcohol) I managed to get a reading sound out of it but still 'please insert disc'. I then saw some dude on youtube with a Q-tip dipped in alcohol clean it, gave it a shot. Same disc stopped making that sound when I closed the tray. I know it's working because it made that sound so I can't justify ordering another...yet.

Keep you posted on what my Dad thinks anyway.

I think my boyfriend tried it already because when I open iTunes it says 'the registry settings used by iTunes for importing and burning CDs/DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning...' etc

But, if you aren't technically inclined, don't try this on your own. Let us know what your experience/comfort level is. Tinkering around in the registry without a better understanding of how it works can wreak havoc.

Had a look at the registry it details (was careful to be in the right one, they're all very similar) but there are no 'Upper' or 'Lower' filters in that specific folder. The only close folder I can see with 'UpperFilters' and 'LowerFilters' is in {4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1 etc etc). In this particular directory it says the following:

(Default) REG_SZ Disk drives
Class REG_SZ DiskDrive

But I can't imagine I want to fiddle with things here!

In the original folder, {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} I have:

(Default) REG_SZ DVD/CD-ROM drives
Class REG_SZ CDROM
ClassDesc REG_SZ @5SystemRoot%\System32\StorProp.dll,-17001
EnumPropPages32 REG_SZ storprop.dll,DvdProprPageProvider

And that's it!

There are sub folders, '0000' and '0001' but still no 'filters'. Just things about the DriverDate, DriverDesc, DriverVersion, InfPath, InfSection, MatchingDeviceID & ProviderName.

I am running Windows 7 and I have heard that the filters aren't here but whereabouts, I'm not sure.

I'm so determined to fix this thing, I could hear it trying to read with TheSims 3 so I'm going to keep trying! Buying a replacement is a last resort! I do think the SSD may have done...something. But I'm not sure.

Well unfortunately this is where I got off the bus lol. When that method didn't work for me (and countless others...) I just caved and bought a new ODD. The key to Windows' functionality is the Registry. If a registry tweak can't even do it. It may be impossible. The reason the best option is to just replace is because if it is software related, you may very well run into another bug down the line. If it's hardware related, then you're really screwed. Spare yourself the headache.

I can assure you that the sole culprit is the ODD unit itself. You can swap out every other piece of hardware & still be up & running. Don't bother reinstalling Windows. That won't work either. You have got me once again wondering about this myself. I'll do some more research & see what I can find.

Okay, aside from Fix problems with CD or DVD drives that can?t read or write media try disabling any real time scans you may have on your anti-virus software.

When this many power users are baffled, it's a matter of a product that should've been recalled. Best of luck.

Yeah if my memory serves me correct, you said you had it for about 4 years. They're built to only take you only about 4 years down the road. The fact you even still have it is something to be proud of. Most users would have just as well broke the entire laptop. Let me know your exact model number and I'll see if I can find a repair manual for you. There are also many vendors online that sell laptop parts but, BUYER BEWARE ! ! ! There are many shady characters out there & we don't want you going just anywhere. I'll do some research for you but, get that full laptop model to us first.

An example of a full laptop model would be Acer Aspire 5742G-7200
An example of a non-full laptop model would be Acer Aspire 5742G

The reason we need a full laptop model is because there may be slightly different build specs within the model family. Each model number has a different set of build numbers. These build numbers represent how the unit is built. For example Acer Aspire 5742G-7200 may not have a bluetooth module but, Acer Aspire 5742G-7201 may have a bluetooth module.

I have had this problem since first upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8 (now 8.1) last year. The Bluray drive appears in This PC. When I double click it it opens the drive and asks me to insert a disc. However when I do so the drive makes a single short attempt to spin up, the green light lights up for a second but nothing further happens.

When I double click the drive again it ejects the disc and asks me to insert a disc again.

I have tried the registry changes to no avail and other suggestions that I have seen working for people but haven't for me. I have ordered an external Bluray writer but I would still like to get this drive working again. I'm aware that it might be a hardware issue however as I recall it seemed to stop working not long after I upgraded to Windows 8.

I'm afraid that software may not be the issue. It's time to junk the drive.

I bought it from a store in Australia [where I live ] so I may take it back there. My dad gave me an external optical drive so I'll just use that for now and maybe take it apart to see if it fits into my laptop. It does work when plugged into my laptop so I do think it's the actual hardware.

I strongly recommend not using an external drive as an internal drive. Even if the drive can sit in the bay, the internal components aren't the same. The USB interface is not designed to be as powerful as any IDE, SATA, etc. interface. The power may be too much for the external drive & can fry it. There is no guarantee this will work.

Hi everyone,

i also had the exact same frustrating problems with my bd e ds4e1s as they are described here. No software-based fixes were working for me, i tried (possibly) all of them...

A disassembly, physical cleanup (removing dust) and clean reassembly of the drive itself (not just removing the drive as a whole from the notebook's case, but also opening up the drive) did the job for me though. It is now again properly detecting and reading discs; no further preperation was required - no installations, no update etc.

You should give it a try, if you already and unsuccessfully tried all the software-related fixes around. It might be working for you too, hopefully.

I just had the same problem! did not get into the whole flashing thing. Just cleaned the lens with cotton swab and some rubbing alcohol and it worked like a charm. Just in case flashing doesn't work, try cleaning the lens!

This guy is a GOD !!!

I was (pardon me my lingua franca) "forking" about with it to make the Slimtype BD E DS4E1S now EA2B firmware to read my CDs and eventually I rubbed the optical heads with the alcohol on the tip of cotton bud and guess what .... sorted!!!

Now I'm going to bazooka my own head of my neck as I spent 12h googling and fixin' and reinstalling and looking for different drivers, drive managers, drivers updates etc ......
