PCs under Network Folder are not accessable

Windows 8.1 PC, For some reason if I click on any pc or device in the network folder in file explorer it comes back with <xxxx> is not accessable.

I can access folders on these same inaccessible pcs from the homegroup folder in the same file explorer, just not the network folder in file explorer

(3) other PCs in the same workgroup are not having any issues accessing these PCs via the network folder in explorer. These PCs are all running windows 7. Unfortunately I don't have a second windows 8 pc for testing.

Based on other threads I think I've looked in the obvious places but its entirely possible that I my have overlooked something. Any suggestions much appreciated.

I have usually issues accessing PCs via the network list when I don't have a matching login on the remote PC.

Thanks for that tip. You may be onto it. This is the only W8 pc, the others are all W7. The W8 pc is using a Microsoft cloud account and the others all use the same local account.

It would seem though that when you clicked on one of the W7 PCs that you would be asked for credentials rather than just coming back with an error?

I don't know why , but I never get asked for a login in W8.1 when I try , it just says I don't have access , but going the other way the W7 PCs bring up a login.

Interesting. What happens when you click on the icon under network for your own machine (the one you're currently on) ?

If you are using Home Group, try using the computers without Home Group turned on. Also in Advanced Sharing Settings, change in "Home Group Connections", to "Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers.". It also helps to know if these units are connecting through wifi or wired connections, and what kind of firewall they are using.

They are all wired desktops and using W8 firewall. Would any of what you suggested alter the fact that I also get the error if I click on the icon that represents the same pc I'm using at the time?

Also, I can certainly change the homegroup and advanced sharing settings but the W7 pcs aren't set that way and don't have this problem. Is W8 different in this regard?

I have no such problems accessing my Windows 7 PC's through the common Workgroup. You shouldn't need to use the same user name and password just to access shared folders on Windows 7 PC's.

It's required to set up sharing for the Users folder on the Windows 7 machines in order for any folders to be sharable through the Workgroup. You would also need to turn on Network Discovery and File and Printer sharing, turn off password protected sharing etc. in the Advanced Sharing settings.

With Windows 8 or 8.1 the Users folders are shared out by default but not so with Windows 7.

The three W7 PCs can access each others machines via the Icon under network. They can also access the W8 pc by its icon under network. The W8 pc sees the icons of the W7 pcs and it's own but gets an error when it clicks on any of those icons under network, including its own.

While the W8 pc can't access other PCs under the network icon, it IS able to access folders on all the other pcs via the machine names under the homegroup folder.

That is strange but no doubt there is a reason for this behavior like the Workgroup name not being the same or an Anti Virus software preventing access, I've never once seen this problem in my own network so I don't believe it's an inherit problem with Windows 8.

It don't think its a workgroup name problem or it wouldn't be able to access the other PCs via homegroup. Antivirus and firewall are just stock Windows 8.

I'm wondering if something got hosed in the 8.1 upgrade? Too bad the W8 refresh wipes all the desktop apps or I'd give it a try. I may wait just to see if update 1 straightens it out before I do a refresh. I don't hold out too much hope though for update 1.

The Workgroup functions completely independent of the Homegroup.

Homegroups will work even if the Workgroup names aren't the same.

The hosed theory is probably more likely to be the problem.
