Laptop Restarts after sleep

Hi there. Can't figure out why my HP laptop restarts when woken up from sleep. Under Windows 7, it worked fine. But not with Windows 8. I have played with all the settings in power configuration. Have changed from having a screensaver to none. Makes no difference. All my drivers are up to date. I do not have HP power management installed. Windows takes care of my power management. And still, it won't resume correctly. Thanks in advance for your tips.

Thanks, Brink. As always, you've got more advanced ideas. All the research I had done so far always leads to basic settings in Power Management or to viruses. I'll try this out and report back.

Unfortunately, my laptop is not AHCI compliant, from what I discovered in the BIOS. So thank you, anyway.

Do you have IDE or AHCI (SATA) drives?

When you go into your BIOS, what's set for the hard drive? (ex: IDE/AHCI/SATA/RAID)

Forgot to ask what brand and model number is the laptop.

Hi Brink. Thanks for your continued interest, and to PhyllisColeman. My laptop is an HP Pavillion g6-1b60us, only 2 yrs old. It has an Insyde Motherboard, which doesn't reveal very much. The info you gather from it is very scanty. Nowhere did I see a mention of AHCI. Even change of settings is very limited, or just to boot settings. Also, I did flash my mobo to the latest version, and that hasn't changed anything. Again, from msinfo32, it shows that my harddisk is a 500 GB Hitachi SATA drive.
My latest endeavor (this morning) was to install the HP Power Manager, which worked under Windows 7; even though I installed it as compatible with Windows 7 and I used the recommended settings, there is still no success. When I wake the PC, I get a message flashing on the screen, saying 'Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart...'

Thanks, Brink, for the link. I got the AMD version right prior to this one, through the HP website as being *the* update under Windows 8. I'll try this one out and report back after testing.

After much installing and uninstalling, I found out that the latest Catalyst driver from AMD does not work on my system. So I am back to square one. Haven't made progress.

Saved the day once again Brink

Hello gallicbear,

I had the same issue on my desktop. Using the tutorial below to add AHCI Link Power Management - HIPM/DIPM to my power plan settings, and setting it to HIPM+DIPM for both "On battery" and "Plugged in" solved this for me.

Hopefully it will for you as well. :)

AHCI Link Power Management - Enable HIPM and DIPM - Windows 7 Help Forums

Wow! Once again I can't thank you enough, I was having an issue where I just did a clean install Win8.1 pro on a Sandisk ultra Plus SSD in the main slot for my gf's laptop and put the old hdd in the cd-rom slot using a sata caddy, but it would crash at the windows load screen everytime I started from a cold boot (shut down, not restart). I knew it couldn't be the SSD because it ran fine after restarts, so I applied the registry hack and set battery and Plugged in to HIPM+DIPM, and so far after several shutdowns and start ups not one crash!

Thank you!

Any idea why this is happening? Happened waking computer from sleep for you Shaun, right? And it happened to me from after a shutdown, which technically is not a full shut down on windows 8/8.1? It is a kind of hibernate, correct?

Hello hotrippr,

I haven't got it narrowed down to anything specific, but the above with AHCI - HIPM+DIPM, and having fast startup turned off helps sometimes.

Well everything is going well so far with the HIPM+DIPM registry tweak so I think I will keep Fast Startup enabled as the PC is starting up lightning fast with it enabled. But thank you I will keep it in mind for future reference if problems should arise.:thumb:

I am having exactly the same problem. I have AHCI enabled in BIOS, but I still do not have that HIPM/DIPM option in advanced power options under hard disk. I do not even have Msachi entry in registry. I tried adding that using a .bat file from internet, and my laptop got stuck in restart loop, that i fixed by restoring using recovery disk. Any help will be appreciated regarding that. Thanks in advance.

Ok, I figured Msachi is not in windows 8, but storachi. I got HIPM/DIPM option under hard hard disk, and I tried almost every setting, that still did not resolve the issue.
