They're working, must have been a connection issue. I've tried everything there twice already thanks. I've yet to find a solution posted anywhere where a user confirms the issue is resolved! If I do find the issue I will post what worked for me.

Ok, Java is recognised only using Java 6 in Windows 8 (for me). Installing Java 7 on top or standalone renders Java not being recognised at all.

Guess Java 6 it is and if I find a solution I will post.

I helped a friend with this issue, we installed both the 64 bit and the 32 bit and yay it finally worked also make sure your java is enabled and that your security is set to medium.

Most probably the 32bit works because the browsers most people use are 32bit as well so the 64bit java is useless online unless you use a 64bit browser (Pale Moon, WaterFox, IE 64bit, Opera...).

Install one by one, install from official sources, do reboots between installs... seems to work...

Installing both will fill more of your storage space. The 32bit one will be sufficient if you only run 32bit browsers and applets.

Exactly! That says what I was trying to say.
This means you only need the version for the browser you're always using.

Installing both is just playing safe, making sure it will always work.
But installing both the 64 and 32 versions isn't very good and reduces security (java based risks on all browsers then).
But what if you don't use both 32 and 64 browsers for java? Then you don't need both java's. Right.

One browser that runs well is more than enough.
If you use 32bit browser: install the 32bit version: default choice.

People make some classic mistakes here: they install 64 bit java while using a 32bit browser and that won't work.
The other way around is also possible but has less occurrence.

I don't think many people use (only) IE 64 but in that case (only) the 64bit java version is needed. This goes for Waterfox, Pale Moon and Opera 64 as well.

I use eclipse to program in java: the java version is 64bit but is not installed for the system just for eclipse so no browser sees it. That doesn't count as java being installed: the online test fails; I cannot run applets but I can manually run java programs.

If I need java online, I install the 32 or 64 but not both (java x64 because I use Pale Moon x64). Just a personal choice.

I ASSUME you are using IE-10.
In TOOLS make sure Active X filtering is OFF.

The problem seems to be browser- and desktop-related.

That thing with the default programs is indeed very ugly. What kind of script do you mention? We'll need to see if java.exe or javaw.exe is needed.

Like when you need to run a jar file, on Win7, normally it would have assigned the default program. If you run or look at a jar file: will it have a java icon on it or that green arrow to select program?

The link above will explain how to fix the issue manually, that would have been fixed automatically by a reinstall as well but sometimes you need to fix it manually.

When I update Java for my software repository, I get 4 downloads. 6uwhatever and 7uwhatever in both 32 and 64 bit. We have a few apps that won't digest the 7u versions.

That might help in your situation also.

As a total non techno, I have struggled to get Java to recognise our label printing when trying to destatch goods.
In simple terms here is what I did and can now print labels

In start page open web google page
click on spanner and click view in desktop mode
It may be necessary to re download Java in this mode and delete any previous attempts.

When you then download using the computer in desktop mode annoying to have to keep opening in one screen and then clicking spanner, but it works. Any application then requiring Java must be opened in desktop.
If you then access internet via other page it will tell you Java not installed when in fact it is.

Had problem with Java on Win8 all browsers. Tried turning off firewall, bypassing router, reinstalling Java, and messing with security settings to no avail. Java was recognized by my machine and in error messages but would not run on websites. It felt like something was blocking it. I did something risky and disabled my Avast antvirus and VOILA... all worked. Installed AVG antivirus and it still works. My suggestion would be to go to Java's test page, disable your antivirus, and test.

I recently updated to Windows 8.1 and can not seem to get any of the aforementioned fixes to get Java to work. I have downloaded update 7 for both 32 and 64 bit, changed my security settings, etc. to no avail.

Are we just stuck until Oracle updates Java to allow it to be compatible with Windows 8.1?
