Microsoft to Fix Blurry Text Bug in Windows 8.1 RTM – Rumo

Windows 8.1 is expected to reach the RTM development stage sometime this month, while general availability is likely to be announced in the coming weeks.

While details on the RTM version are still vague right now, a new rumor spotted on MDL forums indicates that Microsoft might use this build to roll out some essential improvements, including an eagerly-awaited fix for the infamous blurry text bug spotted in both Windows 8 and 8.1.

Testing 8.1 on 2 HP laptops, FF = crisp and nice, IE11 = blur & soft. 100% similar to the example posted here.
Different tricks of no help on these screens, no way to override MS's choices regarding font rendering.
Rats! Did you try to change the IE11 browser font size by using the CNTRL+mouse wheel? Shrink it up a bit and see if it clears up the fuzziness...

Sorry, that made it worse.

Here's a fresh 8.1 snip. Firefox sharp out of the box. IE fonts suffers from bleeding an lack of delimitation.
PS: picture needs to be seen at 100% ! as the forum does some lossy scaling. In FF: right click > view image.

BTW, got other problems when testing IE11, many sites not displaying\loading content properly.
Anyway, no problem, I use FF.

It seems that I have to keep telling people. The sites not working correctly in IE11 are problems with those sites... not problems with IE11.

Many sites do fancy things depending on what browser you use, and they don't know about IE11 because it uses a totally different user agent string, so those sites fail to render correctly.

This is easy to prove. All you have to do is hit F12, and go to the Emulation tab, then set the User Agent String to IE10. All this does is make IE tell the site that it's really IE10, and voila.. the site magically works.

Those sites need to update their code to be compatible with IE11, not the other way around... although Microsoft does have a means to provide compatibility lists for sites that refuse to update themselves.

And none of the so called "fixes" posted here and elsewhere have made any difference whatsoever.
The problem also manifests itself in Office 2013 documents, spreadsheets etc. so it has absolutely nothing to do with websites.

It is bad enough Microsoft refusing to acknowledge there is a problem.

I am extremely disappointed that some Eight Forums members also seem to want to deny there is a problem.

The Safari browser is also much more compatible with the current and emerging HTML standards than Microsoft's Internet Explorer, despite Microsoft's update to IE11 in Windows 8.1. For example, IE11 scores 355 out of 500 points in the HTML5Test.com tests, up from IE10's 320, but well short of 400 in OS X Mavericks' Safari 7, 414 in Mozilla's Firefox 24, and 463 in Google's Chrome 29.

lol, looking at how things looks when using IE11, am experiencing this in practice. And not talking about obscure homemade sites, IE11 desktop (am not using the tile (scr)app) struggles here with mainstream sites like bbc, zdnet, cnet etc. (several different pc's tested).

Everything works perfect++ in FF. My humble opinion, it's IE11 that's incompatible (read that as incompetent), not the sites. And to top the cake, there's the font rendering mess. Have to drop IE as my secondary (to FF) browser, and install chrome. ps: to those who see no IE problems: fine, happy for you. To those who experience the problems: you're not alone.

Doc (heh), I have pinned this down some. I went over to my HTPC which uses a 1080P 40 inch TV in my bedroom. The IE11 text there is definitely a LOT more fuzzy. With my 27 inch 2560x 1440 IPS monitor, not so much.

I also found on my monitor that the fuzzy text depends on the size of the text. I used the Cntrl+mouse wheel to roll through a bunch of sites and there was changes in fuzziness on all of them, sometimes when I SHRUNK the text.

Here is the same page on magnifier, both within one click in size from each other. The top one is less expanded than the bottom one. Look at the word Blurry:
2013-10-24_153429.jpg

2013-10-24_153548.jpg

Here is the same text on FireFox (to cut off those doubters). I increased the font size even more than the IE11 ones and yet it is still sharper:

Just ignore the posts from a person who, since he does not have the problem, likes to blame it on the user. I too got upset now I just skip over them.

It seems that IE11 is the one browser that is the least compatible with HTML standards.

"standards" implies there is a standard. HTML5 is not a standard. It's a working draft. It's not finished.

In fact, if you go to the Html5Test.com site, and start doing some digging and see what they ding IE11 on, you'll find out that many of the specs say explicitly this:

This is a work in progress! For the latest updates from the HTML WG, possibly including important bug fixes, please look at the editors draft instead.

Other things they get dinged on are for things like Server Sent Events, which is more or less a standard that is dead before it's even approved. WebSockets is the preferred approach instead.

I'm also amused at their score weightings. They'll list something with a score of 10/20 and 3 out of the 4 items have a checkmark. They also fail you for something even if you implement 99% of it, and don't implement one seldom used sub-feature.

So you should really take any claim of compatibility with an HTML5 standard with a grain of salt, because the "standard" is still changing. What's compatible today, may not be tomorrow.

I wasn't referring to blurry fonts. That's a totally different issue. I was referring to the claims the IE11 is buggy because it can't render sites correctly. Those are almost always problems with the site itself, and even Microsoft's sites have the same problem (I was on the Microsoft Partner Site the other day and had to use the User Agent trick to make it work correctly, for instance).

K, I have found the problem and the solution.

Win8.1 released version does NOT LIKE to have the text size changed. This applies to both the desktop and BROWSERS. For instance, going to the Display page and increasing the text size will cause burred text. So will going to a browser and using CNTL+ mouse wheel to enlarge the browser screen. The browser now becomes blurry (I verified this). The FIX is to check the box on the display section called "Let me choose One Scaling Level". That should fix both issues.

BTW, loading in a new graphics driver will RESET the resolution back to the default, "fixing" the problem.

Many of us who are having the blurry text problem have already tried this many times.
It does not work for me.

Its Not Just IE11

The text rendering problem this thread refers to is not limited to IE11.

Fortunately, using Firefox, Chrome or just about any non-IE based browser gets around that problem.

However, the text rendering is also just as blurry in Office 2013.
While most of the Office 2013 (desktop) UI renders clearly, open a Word document or Outlook email and the text in the document is blurry just like it is in IE11. Office 2013 is also forcing grey-scale font anti-aliasing on users and ignoring the settings of the OS.

With MS Office, many of us have no choice but to use it for work, so blurry text in Office 2013 is a much more serious issue. So far, none of the organizations I work with have rolled out Office 2013. I dread the day they do.

Microsoft just needs to work more closely with videocard hardware manufactures to get better/updated drivers specifically optimized for Windows 8.1 on older hardware just like they've been doing with touchpad hardware manufactures.

The latest Synaptics touchpad driver for Windows 8.1 really works well on my laptop and has better tracking (previously was too fast and jumpy on Windows 8) and Windows 8.1 specific features that works in conjunction with the new kernel.

BTW, got other problems when testing IE11, many sites not displaying\loading content properly.
Anyway, no problem, I use FF.

I was responding to that comment by him. If someone makes a comment in this thread, i'm not going to create a new thread to respond to it. That's stupid.

Hello, IE navigation trouble is fixed: in 'Turn Windows features on or off' unticked ie11, rebooted. Went back and ticked it, rebooted, chose 'recommended settings', works fine and fast now, am impressed by the speed. So just needed a refresh.

Sadly, the font blur prevails on all my (older and recent) laptops.
