This PC - Add or Remove "Folders" in Windows 8.1

How Add or Remove Default "Folders" from This PC in Windows 8.1

information   Information
In Windows 8.1, Computer has been renamed to This PC. This PC now displays your Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, and Videos folders in addition to the usual devices and drives (hard drives, optical drives, and removable devices) and network locations.

These linked "Folders" are shortcuts of the folders in the C:\Users\(user name) profile folder of the currently signed in user.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the default Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, and Videos folders from only This PC (Computer) for all users in Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to do the steps in this tutorial.

warning   Warning
Be sure that you use the correct download from Option One or Option Two below for your 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1 for it to work properly.

Tip   Tip
Recent Windows Updates have been resetting this and restoring Folders back to This PC.

If this happens to you after installing Windows Updates, then you can just reapply the .reg file below again.

I was just wondering if you guys have this tutorial up here 'cause I just found out, like, five minutes ago, how to do this. Annoying as hell, those folders, and for most users with more than one partition completely useless. Now I can scale down my Explorer window to the size of the context pane :D

Very useful tutorial Shawn! :thumb:
Thanks again!

Now all I need (in case I want to get to the folders quickly without restoring them) is re-enable "Libraries" or add the needed ones to "Favorites"...

When I merge 64-bit_Remove_All_Folders_in_This_PC.reg it doesn’t show in the navigation pane anymore.

But when I create a new folder in download it appears under "This PC" again.

Hope it helps :)

I'm not seeing this when I do the same. As a test, try merging the download .reg file (step 3) again, be sure to approve all prompts (step 12), then restart your PC to see if you still have this issue.

Hello Pintu, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Did you move your user folders or profile to another location by chance?

Please export (right click -> Export) these two keys below from your registry as .reg files, and upload them here. I'll take a look at them to see if they may show what the issue may be. :)

The tutorial says about to "ADD" and to "REMOVE" folders. I think it is misleading because it only talks about removing those folders. I want to add new "additional folders" besides the six default folders. Your tutorial says nothing about that.

Hello Max, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I'm sorry, but this tutorial is for the default "Folders" in "This PC" only. That's why it doesn't say anything about other folders.

Please go ahead and create a new thread in the Customization forum area instead to see what we can do to help. :)

Hello Random, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Please go ahead and post a screenshot showing this to see if it may help to ID the issue. :)

Hi, Thanks for your reply. Here the screenshot:

When I merge 64-bit_Remove_All_Folders_in_This_PC.reg it doesn’t show in the navigation pane anymore.

But when I create a new folder in download it appears under "This PC" again.

Hope it helps :)

Same Problem With Me. Help?:(

I had the same problem, and the downloads folder also did refresh correctly when I created new objects. Here is how I fixed both problems:
  1. Right-click "Downloads" in the navigation pane under "Favorites," select "Remove"
  2. Go to your user folder (type username in address bar)
  3. Open the "Downloads" folder
  4. Right-click "Favorites" in the navigation pane, select "Add Current Location to Favorites"

The problem, if you take a look at your screenshot is that the shortcut under "Favorites" shows "This PC>Downloads" (which should no longer exist). What you need is "Username>Downloads."

Also, if you want the "This PC>Downloads" to go away when opening files, then go to

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{374DE290-123F-4565-9164-39C4925E467B}\ShellFolder
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{374DE290-123F-4565-9164-39C4925E467B}\ShellFolder

and change "attributes" from f080004d to f090004d. You might need to do the same for all the other "This PC" folders...

Desktop Folder – {B4BFCC3A-DB2C-424C-B029-7FE99A87C641}
Documents Folder – {A8CDFF1C-4878-43be-B5FD-F8091C1C60D0}

Hello,

Apologies if i missed this, i did read 4 pages...

The tutorial says Add or Remove, I want to add some folders, not the default ones, but some new ones. Is it possible, if so how? Ideally i'd like to add my library folders.

Thanks for any help.

EDIT: Opps.. i should have read page 6! Ok this does not cover it.. shame. Cheers.

gmawet, thank you! I had the same thing, and may never have realized what was causing it.

Brink, I think this would be worth adding to the original post. I was having the same issue, that basically if I dragged My Pictures to favorites instead of what's written above, every time I actually entered a folder inside Pictures, it would resurrect under This PC temporarily, until I closed that folder window.

Just some praise - those regfiles saved me countless puzzled hours.
I have moved from XP to 8.0 to 8.1 in a month-with ClassicShell-:)
