Buy Windows 8.1 - Microsoft Store

Microsoft said:
If you're already running Windows 8 you'll be automatically upgraded to Windows 8.1 for free on October 17. If you're running Windows 7, pre-order Windows 8.1 now.

@ Wds, andyparks, krappo, prestwich1, gasdel, burtie, and anyone else who has upgraded via the Store.

Thanks for posting your results. I gotta go to work. When I return I'll upgrade if all goes well for you. Much rather have ISO, but it seems it's going well. Good luck!

BTW, Welcome to Windows EightForums, prestwich1 and gasdel. It's good to have you aboard. :)

No problem. Now it's finished setting up "settings" (what ever that was) and now it's saying it's setting up a few more things! lol Honestly that's what it says on my screen...now it's on 3% again.

I would have preferred an ISO, but the store update was/is pretty smooth and so simple.

Hope it will be finished soon...I need to turn my pc off before I go away for the weekend! lol

Hi all, 1st post.

I am at work now so I can't check but about 30 minutes after the update should have been available, I didn't see it in the Windows Store.

Do you think this could be an issue because I updated to the 8.1 Preview iso? If so, do you know any workarounds?

Thanks!

Slow Connection Issues

Hi all. Does anyone know if the download will resume if the internet connection is lost? I am in Zambia where we never have a reliable connection. A download of this size would normally take 2 or 3 days using a bitorrent client or download manager.

Unless the download will resume or an iso becomes available that I can use a download manager with, this update is pointless to me as my connection never stays on for more than 3 or 4 hours at a time (and even then I am lucky if I get 50kb/s!). I have been downloading the update for an hour now and I can just about see a slither of green in the progress bar.

Do you think Microsoft presumes the whole world has high speed broadband? I would wager the majority of the world does not rendering a 3.6gb file download nigh on impossible for millions of their customers (unless the download resumes after a broken connection is restored).

Sorry if this has already been covered, but I'm getting a new laptop today with Windows 8. Before I go and start removing all the bloat- does the 8.1 upgrade give me the option of a clean 'vanilla' install?

Thanks.

Thank god I upgraded my Internet package about a month ago, 60% in 10mins lets hope the rest of the upgrade goes smoothly.

Everything seems to work fine on the laptop except the secondary AMD Radeon HD Graphics driver.:mad, The primary Intel ones work great. I can only hope that a compatible one is found as the HP website only has the Windows 7 ones available & I found the Windows 8 HP compatible ones by chance on a reputable 3rd party site.

Yea, you'll be able to download the 8.1 iso for free on the 18th (Friday!) I believe...according to what Microsoft says.
Have Microsoft really said you'll be able to download the ISO for free? Can you post a link (or is it on another thread)?

The only thing I can say for sure is that Microsoft has already released full 8.1 iso's to Technet and MSDN subscribers (a month ago), and the iso's have been suitably uploaded to the Internet already where they are obtainable by anyone right at this second (Bing/Google "microsoft.windows.8.1.rtm.X64.english.dvd-wzt" (without the quotes).) You have to have a valid 8.0 key to use to have them authorize, of course, because they are the real thing (TM). Additionally, on Friday, retail 8.1 will go on sale both in the form of downloadable iso's purchased direct from Microsoft, and also in retail box kits that will contain DVDs with the full 8.1 iso imprints.

Therefore...it beggars believability to assume an 8.1 iso direct from Microsoft would not also be made available to 8.0 owners who want to upgrade, either today or tomorrow. The image is already available on the Internet, as I said. And of course, without valid 8.0 authorization keys the iso's are useless.

Yeah I also checked Windows update there but there wasn't any. I'm guessing that's because I'm running the evaluation copy of 8.1.

Anyway checking my laptop, which does have 8.1 RTM installed, I haven't gotten anything through the store, but Windows update offered me 3 updates totaling 241 meg.

8.1 update.PNG

As you indicate, the main one, 230 meg, is a roll up and finishing touch for 8.1 - Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 General Availability Update Rollup

As soon as I post this, I'll update as post back.

Or indeed the Microsoft Store website, from which you will indeed be able to download an ISO tomorrow (but you'll have to pay for the privilege).

It's not helpful that Microsoft have created 2 different things (the Windows Store and the Microsoft Store) which can both be called "The Store".

It did for me. I lost connection about 18% into the down load. I went back to the store and clicked on the download app again and it picked up at the 18% mark.

I'm downloading now too...........and I must be crazy for doing so. I finally just got used to 8 and got everything the way I wanted it, running perfect.........and this download is incredibly slow! I keep trying to talk myself out of STOPPING the download.......and just leave things the way they are for now.......but I can't......but from what I read, after the download finishes, you have to manually click the installer file on the desktop, correct? If you change your mind, you can just delete that file? Or am I wrong?

Oh Oh, and can someone explain to me about the .iso...........why do people prefer that over the store upgrade?
