upgrade b75 chipset to z77 chipset - prebuild issue

Hi guys,

some advice please. I have a friend who has passed me an advent DT2412 desktop computer.

The mobo has failed (MSI B75MA-P45) and he wants to replace it with a MSI Z77A-G43.

I suggested that this would need a fresh re-install as its a different chipset but the question I want to ask is that is he allowed to do this with the computer being a prebuild?

If my friend installed a new B75 chipset motherboard then it would be seen as a direct replacement but if he upgraded to a Z77 chipset then this would be seen as an upgrade and thus the recovery discs supplied by advent would not be valid.

am I correct in saying this?

many thanks in advance for all comments. :)

I may be way off on this, and will surely be told so if I am, but I believe:

He should be able to boot into safe mode, then uninstall the old chipset in Device Manager. Reboot normally and possibly Windows will install the new chipset on its own.

Hi popeye. thanks for the comments.

However, its not the chipset i'm worried about. Its the windows registration that's the issue. will windows allow the OS to be registered.

I honestly don't know about 8 in this situation. The last time I had to do something like this (Win 7), phone registration worked. Security is so tight with 8 it may not work. I'm sure someone who knows better will post.

The OEM manufacturer's license can not be transferred to a new PC/Mobo.

I take it whether I buy MSI or gigabyte there shouldn't be any booting issues? or will I have to try and buy the make make and model?

You would need to go to PC World & odrer the advent DT2412 desktop computer version.

or
Buy a new license.

Hi theog,

I contacted PC world/Advent support/Currys. There online support states that i must contact advent directly for a replacement part.

I called advent support directly and they informed me that they do not stock the part (taking into account that the computer is 6months old. not covered by warranty as PC world informed the client that the warranty was void as the owner had installed a GTX660 graphics card in the computer).

They also informed me that they had looked on there partsmaster (Spares, Spare Parts & Accessories - Currys Partmaster.co.uk) website and could not find the motherboard replacement or the PC.

i think this is a prime example as to why we should not purchase from this company.
