Hurry up and wait: Why Microsoft's holding Windows 8.1

Computerworld - Microsoft's decision to sit on Windows 8.1 for two months after engineers wrap up work was driven by the year's biggest sales cycles, analysts said.

On Wednesday, Microsoft announced it would release Windows 8.1, the first of what's expected to be annual updates to Windows 8, through the Windows Store on Oct. 17. The next day, retail copies of the updated operating system will hit retail, as will new Windows 8.1-powered devices from Microsoft's OEM (original equipment manufacturer) partners.
But with a late August completion date for Windows 8.1 still on track -- what Microsoft calls RTM, for "release to manufacturing" -- some have wondered why the Redmond, Wash., developer plans to hold the update for eight or more weeks.
The questions are justified: Microsoft has made much of its accelerated development and release schedule for Windows updates. Those updates are far more than collections of bug fixes, like the now-discarded service packs, but include improvements, enhancements, and new features and software.

So, are you saying these folks are a valid political party and their statements are valid political statements?

I say "NO". So, when I say your statement is tea party rhetoric, I'm referring to the over-exaggerated doomsday rhetoric to describe something.

I was driving home from work yesterday and there was an accident on the highway so the highway I used was backed up for like 10 miles. A tea party rhetoric to describe the situation would be "the engineer who designed the highway I was using was clearly an idiot who didn't know how to design anything because he didn't account for a major crash in the middle of the highway. He probably cheated on every test he ever had in college anyway."

That would be a tea party rhetoric. It's got nothing to do with politics. But it is tea party rhetoric nonetheless.

Look at all the doomsday rhetoric about windows 8 on here. How are those different than the folks holding up those signs in the picture above?

These IDIOTS have NO validity whatsoever, it is a party fuelled by innuendo, racism, sexism. They are DANGEROUS, in that they have gotten elected into positions of POWER. This needs to be severely dealt with in 2014. A Public Servant has to be BETTER than me. They cannot be PETTY, they need to be able to do their JOBS. They have created 500 plus conspiracies and told us that Obama is involved in each one and have gotten millions of people top BELIEVE them, where there is not a SHRED of evidence and in fact these things do not even exist. They never happened.

For one thing, *I* never got any free cell phones from Obama, Not to mention the Lifeline Program that these pricks go on and on about, is something that happened under Reagan. If you SHOW them the Lifeline Website that clearly defines what the program does, well, facts just do not exist for these F----s.

That logic has about the same validity in saying that in spite of INCREASING sales of Camper Wagons and "Winnebago" type vehicles the sales of Solar Powered Can openers hasn't risen at all -- and we all know how owners of these types of vehicles use every excuse in the book to show how independent they are from relying on anybody else for their supplies.

So you travel across the countryside in a "Solar Powered Can Opener" and open cans using a "Camper Wagon"? :sarc:

The trouble with your "Camper Wagons vs Solar Powered Can Openers" analogy, is the two things have completely unrelated functions.

People can access the Internet via desktops/laptops, phones and tablets (i.e. these devices have overlapping functionality).

The number of people accessing the Internet via:
  • Mobile devices is increasing
  • Desktops/laptops is static or declining
Sales of:
  • Mobile devices are increasing
  • Desktops/laptops are declining
According to you, these two things are completely unrelated?

W8 has not arrested the decline in desktop sales.
That said, I think it is unfair to say W8 caused sales to drop.
IMO, it would be fair to say that W8 did not boost desktop and laptop sales.

Hi there.

You are only "Half right" - in that the essence of the thread was that it is W8 that is causing the drop in Home PC's -- this is CLEARLY NOT the case - it's obviously the increasing convenience and use of mobile devices for casual communication and Internet browsing. If you are in a busy bar and need to say check the times of the local buses it's far simpler to use a mobile phone than get out a laptop.

Declining PC sales though DOES NOT MEAN the PC is dead --far from it --it's just that the market has now matured and volumes will essentially be very much smaller than in during years of growth when the PC was the only game in town (no smart phones / tablets around) and hardware was not as good. Even now if you buy a PC - how many people really need the power of an I7 processor in it.

We will eventually when more sophisticated hardware appears for producing genuine VR experience or proper holographic displays but for email / excel etc or even photoshop it's probably true to say that the PC in its present form has reached the end of its evolutionary road and we are in that period between the end of one type of equipment while waiting for the next generation to appear.

There will be some glitches on the way --such as with 3-D in the movie theatres --strangely enough I'm surprised that this technology hasn't appeared on computers yet in any large volume --I'd much rather have 3-D technology than Touch any day --even if you do have to wear those stupid glasses --but that will change too.

Cheers
jimbo

I'm not arguing that desktop/laptop PCs are dead.
There's no way I'll be replacing my desktop with a phone or tablet.

I have previously argued that exact point.
The desktop PC market is saturated and since PCs are fairly reliable, the majority of sales are replacements (and not many of those are required in any given year).

I personally suspect that desktop PCs will be around long after tablets have gone back into their traditional niche (i.e. glorified clipboards).

How are tablets going to cope with so-called 4k graphics?
Their batteries will go flat within minutes.

Note:
I don't consider eBook Readers to be tablets.

How are tablets going to cope with so-called 4k graphics? The same way that cell phones used to be the size of a backpack and weighed 30 pounds. I dare you to look at me with a straight face and say that technology will never ever advance to a point where it will be possible to have 4k graphics in a device the size of a tablet and still have 10hr+ battery life.

Perhaps they should have closed down the patent office back in 1899?

Sorry, he mentioned Tea Farty and my eyes ran red with blood.

That's the reason why these topics are not allowed...

No offense to anyone, but I expect people who visit this forum to have at least above 4th grade level reading skills. I've clearly explained a couple times that when I say tea party rhetoric it's got nothing to do with politics. It refers to the over-exaggerated statements from misleading to outright lies. You know, the types of over-exaggeration of how bad 8 is as portrayed by h8ters and that 8 is the cause of slumping PC sales even though every evidence out there points to the saturation of the markets and households of tablet devices and previous versions of PC's as the real causes.

One good example of Lemon wold be Ford Edsel, (google it if you are not old enough or don't know much about cars) but Win8 can not be put in the same basket. For one, it works and works good, aside from some people not liking the UI.
UI is NOT OS.

The Edsel was a "lemon" because it was the way wrong car at the wrong time and was trying to fit a gap that didn't exist at the time. The 58's were bad because of the teletouch tranny had issues though. They were solid built cars, just not what the public wanted at the time. I have a 1959 and my father inlaw has a total of 7 from 58-60. All run on the original motors and tranny's.

You could say that W8 is similar in regards to the fact it was the wrong OS at the wrong time. Nothing really wrong with how it runs, but not what people were looking for in a UI, but under the hood it is solid :) I wouldn't call the Edsel or W8 a lemon though, just the wrong thing at the wrong time. A lemon implies something wrong in how it runs.....

Geeve
