Windows 8.1 preview ISO's to be released by Microsoft

In a message on the MyDigitalLife forums, Neowin forum member FaiKee has posted what he says are extracts from an official Windows 8.1 Preview Q&A that will go live on Microsoft's website on June 26. The Q&A states the Windows 8.1 Preview will also be available for download as an ISO file in addition to the Windows Store direct update.

Try Windows 8.1 in search?
No dice... this blows.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the update and everything goes fine except when I go to the store there's nothing there for 8.1
No luck with the search either. Thanks though. Any other ideas?

Is there not a banner across your Start Screen questioning whether to update after reboot? Please see post #15 here: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/27188-windows-8-1-preview-download-install.html
Thank you for the help. The update was never available when I clicked on store.. I went to the MS forum and millions of others were experiencing the same problem. Go figure lol
Thanks again.

If I upgrade my 8 install to 8.1 preview then will I be able to upgrade to 8.1 final ?

Upgrading from Windows 8.1 Preview to RTM will remove all installed apps

From the Classic shell forums (posted by user fresnogamer):

"The first thing I noticed is the Windows start button under the classic shell start button. I restarted a couple of times but it was still there. So I researched online how to disable the official Windows start button. No luck.

At the end of the day I just disabled the Classic Shell start button. Now when I click on the start button it shows the Windows start screen and when I use the Windows key I get Classic Shell. For now this works for me because I usually use the Windows button to get the start menu.

If anyone else has a better solution, please let me know.

Thanks all!"

We shall see how long it takes for them to get around MS on this one. I have a feeling though that they will get it working and then MS will kill it again with the RTM....

Geeve

I installed the Classic. I found no difference from the installation in Windows 8. The customisation is as was.

I could see that the new Windows 8.1 button lurked underneath, but it made no difference to the operation of the Classic button.

Modernmix also working 100%

Thanks again.

There seems to be a bit of confusion here as I couldn't find it at the store either at first. Anyway it seems you have to install this first Windows 8.1 Preview - Microsoft Windows, let it do it's thing. Then, when Windows re-boots, it'll tell you to go to the store and download the update. Kind of weird, but that's how I got it. It's also mentioned in Brinks tutorial under method one...

There are two ways to install Windows 8.1 Preview: through the Windows Store (Option One below) or through the ISO (Option Two below)....

OPTION ONE

Download and Install Windows 8.1 Preview through Windows Store

1.
For how, see: Windows 8.1 Preview - Microsoft Windows

Strange.

the fake 8.1 start button goes over the top of classic shell orb for me. Might be because I use winaero skin for classic shell.

Introducing WinAero’s exclusive Skin Pack for Classic Shell | Winaero

I haven't got round to fixing the post 8.1 update BSOD yet.

Might have a go a t fixing the BSOD now.

I noticed the fake start button can invoke a number of completely different menus - no consistency there. The power user menu ( plain grey thing ), the kiddie squares ( start screen or all apps ), or the navigation menu. Bit of a mess.

I only had a quick look due to bsod, but it is not encouraging so far. I don't think anyone looking for a desktop os will be gagging to buy this thing.

Looks good so far but I'm not really seeing anything mind blowing yet. On the flipside since this is on a VM machine vs. my laptop, I probably won't notice much since I rarely use the VM vs. my Win 8 laptop.

I'm in the same boat, nothing mind blowing. A few things will be nice for many, but I don't think it's going to massive change people's opinions of Windows 8 in general.

Wait... I'm getting ready to install this, but was having some trouble. But you are saying if I install the preview over my legit copy of Win 8 I will get a watermark? Forget that. Nothing compelling enough in this update to deal with all these problems.

Thanks for the info, though.

Yes, this is a preview release, it has a watermark.

And later if when 8.1 is final, you cannot update from the Preview Release to the full release. You will have to basically reload your OS with all of your apps.

Well I'm actually growing to like Windows 8 since I use it a lot with my laptop. Just not quite ready to make it my main OS on my desktop yet.

BTW I noticed earlier in this thread that you were looking for an HD4000 Intel driver. Did you find it? I ask because my laptop has an Intel HD 4000 and should I install 8.1 on it, I'd like to know this isn't an issue.

Thanks.
