Solved Keyboard layout?

Just use PC Settings, its right down there at the right hand corner: Because I use UK Language but US Keyboard. That was one of the first things I had to tackle, I had installed UK language, it gave me UK Keyboard, I had restart the install and choose the US kb.

An input language must be installed before it can used it as you mentioned. As for instance in my rigs, all running English Windows but me using mainly the Finnish keyboard layout, I cannot simply select it from the settings menu after install is done. I must first add Finnish Input Language and then add input method, only then can I use my native keyboard layout.

Your situation is completely different, you are talking about two keyboard layouts within the same Input Language, English.

Yes, but the language is UK English - But it gives me the option to choose a US KB. I newer installed any other language packs, I'm still using UK English. The Whole Disk is UK English, the disk I used, for Media Center version. But yours looks like the reverse.

When you started the install, did you choose US English as the language? It would have given you a US Keyboard, unless you choose UK kb in the Setup. It's all there on the Setup Screen, I think it installs whatever Input language you choose. Now that I think about it, my very first Windows 8 install came up with a UK KB, and no way to add a different one at that point - So I had to totally reinstall, choosing the US KB in Setup. Then, then Setup got to the point where it was asking for SkyDrive accounts, I was able to enter my @ key. Sounds like our two cases are just reversed.

Sorry but no.

OP has installed a Japanese Windows. US keyboard layout or input language are not installed automatically in any other than English Windows, in other language versions it is only installed if the user specifically selects it when installing.

Naturally we non-native English speakers most often want to use a keyboard layout we are more familiar with. Especially our OP; the Japanese Windows needs of course to be installed with Japanese input language, otherwise it would be close to useless.

Please believe me: your solution will not work for the OP who has Japanese Windows, nor for me who has English Windows but am using Finnish keyboard layout, nor does it work for my wife who has a German Windows which when installed only includes the German keyboard layout. Not to speak of other 30+ Windows languages.

I noticed I need to clarify my posts a bit:

The original issue was about English, yes. Regarding English layouts and input language you are right, of course. But the issue was solved, this thread marked solved.

What I have been talking here for the last couple of posts is this new OP who came in explaining his / her issue in post #15: http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/4050-keyboard-layout-2.html#post224523

My comments about Japanese OP and Windows refer to this new unsolved issue in this old solved thread.

I was responding to the original post before I realized it was solved, I had posted. I'm not familiar with using Japanese, Chinese, yes, I had to set that up for my friends wife, so they could switch languages instantly.

Yes, English Language + Japanese IME doesn't let me type in Japanese. It only changes the keyboard layout to a Japanese keyboard.

from top to bottom
1. English input with English keyboard (rigth keyboard, but can only type in English)
2. English input with Japanese keyboard (wrong keyboard, and can only type in English)
3. Japanese input with Japanese keyboard (can type in Japanese, but wrong keyboard)
4. Korean input with Korean keyboard (not the issue right now)

and what I need is:

OK, I have tested this now. I created a new user account and changed it to use Japanese display language. I have no problems typing in Japanese and Latin characters when display language is English, and no problems typing both Latin and Japanese characters when display language is Japanese.

Let's check you are doing it correctly.

Japanese display language, Latin (English) keyboard layout installed:

You toggle Japanese / Latin character set by clicking the marked character in language bar. Clicking the A system switches to Japanese character set and the character A in language bar switches to this Japanese character to indicate you are now using Japanese character set. In other words, the symbol shows which character set the system is currently using, clicking it toggles between the two character sets:

Right clicking the IME symbol gives this menu (you might understand it a bit better than me ):

As I said, I could type with Japanese or Latin characters without issues (though not understanding what I was typing...).

Let me ask you one question: when you change to Japanese IME, and you type [shift + 2], what character do you get?

Takes a moment or two, uninstalled Japanese already and deleted the user account I had for testing. Let me do it again, give me half an hour or so.

Using Japanese as Display Language and Japanese IME Input Language, I get the @ sign when pressing SHIFT + 2:

Pressing SPACE after the @ opens a context menu instead of adding a space:

Yes, that means you probably have [Japanese input system] + [English keyboard layout]
On my system, when I press shift + 2, I get ["], meaning that I have
[Japanese input system] + [Japanese keyboard layout].
By the way, can you change to a Japanese keyboard layout on your system if you wanted? Meaning when you press shift + 2 you would get a ["] instead of a [@]

Japanese layout as well as EN-US gives the @ sign. Changing to EN-UK or my Finnish layout gives the quotation mark ".

I mean, do you have the option to add different keyboard layouts "under" Japanese IME?

No matter what I do, no matter what combination of input languages and keyboard layouts I try, I always get an ["] when pressing shift + 2.
I must be missing something very basic here.

When you type in Japanese, now you get a [@] after pressing shift + 2.
Without changing back to EN-UK or your Finnish layout, can you get a ["] after pressing shift + 2?
