DDR-333 is the same as PC2700. They're both CAS 2.5, 184 pin DIMMs (for desktop PCs). I guess that the 128X64 is a 1GB stick, while the other is 512MB.

I read that there can be a high/low density compatibility issue with DDR, similar to the problem with the previous generation of SDRAM. I don't know how to ID high density RAM. You'd also have to know whether your motherboard could use it.

If you're thinking of mixing the two types, the simplest advice: don't do it. They may not play well together.

Crucial says I need this.

184 pin DIMM DDR PC2700 CL= 2.5 unbuffered non EEC DDR333 2.5v 128meg x 64

which is a 1 gb stick.

I can get 2 of these cheap.

64M x 64 SDRAM
C1W43420227
PC700U-25330-B0
512MB DDR 333 CL 2.5

They are 2x 512 sticks

I don't intend to mix them, but no matter how cheap it is, it's too expensive if it doesnt work.

I imagine that they'd be OK. My only reservation is the high/low density issue. (I ran afoul of that, back in the 440BX chipset days.)

What motherboard is it for? Obviously not the Gigabyte vm900m in your system specs, which wants DDR2.

It's for an old Dell which I have been playing around with. It's dog slow but 1gb of ram might just make it serviceable for a back up.

Hey Bobkn.

If you wouldn't mind, and if you know.

Would this fit.?

Probably.

If it's for an old Dell, why not take the model number and visit www.crucial.com? They'll offer a list of all the RAM that they sell that is compatible with the system. Crucial isn't always the absolutely lowest priced RAM, but they guarantee compatibility.

That's absolutely what I would do if I was going to buy ram for it.

But honestly the whole thing is not worth the price of 1 gb ram.

So just keeping my eyes open for cast offs.

Good plan.

I'd hoped that the DIMM that you mention would be on their list of compatible RAM. It may work even if it isn't on the list.

Just out of curiosity, what Dell model is it?

It's an

OptiPlex GX270 the warranty expired on 13-5-07

Isn't Dell wonderful. I ran a full diagnostic check on it and it passed everything. It has 2x256 sticks in it and I think 1gb might make it usable in a pinch.

O yes I see what you mean now, use crucial to check all varities.
