Oops! I lost the eBay auction for the i5-3750k and I was going to buy the i7-3770k, but it's an "in store" fdeal only and we do not have Micro Center anywhere near us, so I'll see what I can get the best deal on... I'll start with Amazon. Thanks again!!

The i7 is a better choice for the extra cores. The i5 had no hyper-threading.
For the rest it seems those cpu's are brothers made from exactly the same specs:

I know what you mean. My main PC is over 5 years old, at least the CPU is (Q6600). I replaced the board last year and added some RAM (6 GB). I tend to buy "better" products and then use them for a longer period of time. This PC that I'm building will probably go to our son at Christmas (with a better video card) and I'll build another for me with the same components...

New Haswell chips coming out real soon with a new socket (1050 I believe), so something to look at for your Christmas build.

My PC is only two years old and although I am champing at the bit to build a new one, especially after reading your posts :p, I realize that I wouldn't gain a whole lot in performance, so I work hard at restraining myself. :D

I'm at the other end of the stick. I'm on a disability pension so I end up buying what I can afford in dribs and drabs. I bought a bare bones kit and slowly upgraded it one piece at a time. With a bare bones kit I at least have a working usable PC after the "some assembly required" part. ;) I've actually finally upgraded everything so the original bare bones kit is now my spare PC. I'm an electronic technician by trade so I like the putting together and getting working part of a new build. :D

Thanks, but I don't buy technology when it's released, it's too costly. I buy the next level or two down and get a good deal... If I get a new CPU that takes a different socket, I'll have to buy a new motherboard and RAM and that is expensive, especially when the products are 1st released...

Hey Art, that looks like a great setup so far. :thumbsup:Can I ask what you paid for the motherboard? I was looking at some Asus boards that didn't have near as many nice features as your Intel board and it would be interesting to compare prices.

Art, I've got a question for you. I see that you are installing a watercooled CPU cooler. What is the main reason NOT to go for an aircooled CPU cooler? Is the watercooled CPU cooler that much better, or more silent? Does it need less maintenance, or more?

I'm just interested and have been wondering a while now weather or not it is worthwhile to upgrade that component of my pc.
