Well on the one hand Google IS highly evil and they will get smacked around a lot because of this kind of behavior.

On the other hand
1) Lack of a good you tube experience on WinPhone8 is one of about 500 reasons it is not doing well.
2) I just gotta say, "Karma is a handsome frog isn't it MS"? They have been stonewalling competitors WRT MS networking interoperability for two decades!
Microsoft is completely losing it's sanity...

I don't see the big fuss as Windows Phone has MetroTube, BY FAR THE best metro designed app for Windows Phone and the best YouTube app on any platform.

But google making it impossible to allow the API usage for a YouTube app on a platform that isn't anywhere near close to google's mobile platform is straight up idiotic and childish. Really right now? Really?

Don't be evil, google said. Let's prevent YouTube API usage on particular platform, google said...

Speculation has it that google is shanking Microsoft because they're actually making more money off android than google themselves, due to royalties. That's what happens when you release a free-to-use platform and don't properly license patents...

Microsoft to this day has not made the current version of the microsoft networking protocols public. They never have. At best they document previous generation protocols and leave the current ones a dark secret. Always have, always will... Microsoft is no different now than before.

(Actually "always" will will stop the day they only have 20% of the market and are insanely desperate to survive I guess)

Well, he wasn't necessarily referred to the anti-trust violations.

It's not really shocking that companies try to protect their interests, and make things difficult on competitors. Where I take issue is when MS makes it seem like Google is doing something that they haven't been doing themselves for years.

Just as an example, we could target the fact that MS has released IE5, then IE6, then IE7 and then IE8 and then IE9 and now we are working on IE10...and as a selling point each and every time we have heard about how it's "becoming more and more standards compliant". Yes, for years and years and years we haven't exactly followed web standards and thus sites developed for our browser and our way of doing HTML might not display on alternative browsers which actually follow the standards.

Hi there
Why do people bother with this sort of stuff -- if you LIKE the new Windows 8 phones (and there's loads of people who do) --then just BUY one -- who on earth cares a toss whatever "The opposition" say about competing products.

I like the SAMSUNG Galaxy latest smart phones -- I have the Galaxy IIIs and it's little brother - the Galaxy IIIs Mini. (I need two - one my home number and another "pay as you go" type when I'm on contract in various countries so I can have a local number) - but other people might not like android -- just use what you are happy with.

From what I've seen of the new Windows 8 phones --they look perfectly good to me -- if I hadn't have already bought the Samsungs I'd definitely be considering them -- note the Windows 8 phones --not the earlier Windows 7 mobile stuff -- those weren't great phones.

Use your OWN research -- remember the experts don't always get it right -- just look at the Standard and Poors credit rating agency -- they didn't see the whole Banking crisis coming with all the "Sub prime slime" until it was right under their nose - and even then they didn't think "it was a serious problem" -- and people still rely on this type of agency today. !!!

Cheers

I agree do your own research, I bought the HTC OneX, I can't believe this phone didn't sell by the bucket. Great phone, great photos and awesome music. I don't care about reviews except to make a comparison, I don't care if my phone only has 2% of the market as long as it does what I want it to do.

I'm almost positive my next phone will be a Windows 8 phone, they're starting to look pretty awesome and by the time I'm ready to buy one, I'm positive all the main apps will be there.

The thing I don't still get is why google is intentionally not allowing access to the YouTube API, SPECIFICALLY for Windows Phone when ios has access and android obviously. Seems stupid and really menial to do that. The only thing google has to say about that is that the mobile version of the website is good enough to use. It's sucky compared to a decent app, such as MetroTube.

There is also the fact that google will NOT be delivering ANY of their apps over to Windows Phone. Also, Microsoft had to update some Mail app things to allow IMAP access as google is departing from supporting mail apps from Microsoft.

Now, it's just been reported, though it may be a glitch, that maps.google.com on the IE Mobile browser of Windows Phone isn't going through, it's being redirected. This is probably a glitch than anything.

On Microsoft's behalf, they've been on google recently about the paid Shopping results from the site. This isn't new as they've gone out and said that gmail users are having their mail read without their permission so they can be advertised to. Difference from that and now is that Microsoft went to the telly to advert that, versus just online.

I don't know, but if you compare this to the US and Soviet Union, it sounds like they're going to go war, or at least be in GIANT piddling contest and trying to block each other off at any possible opportunity. The consumer (rest of the world in this metaphor) gets harmed. One can't use a Windows Phone and their google services. One can't use an android and possibly won't be able to use Microsoft's services.

This is idiotic. And again, the only cause for this is is from Microsoft getting android royalties and throwing crap at google.

The way I see it Google seems to be threatened by Windows Phone even though it has a small market share. They see it has the potential to gain market share and become the 3rd ecosystem, I'm sure they would prefer to only compete against Apple not MS as well.

Hi there

Most sensible comment yet I've seen --if you like the phone and it does what you want within your budget --go for it.

BTW a lot of the newer phones have possibilities to add 32 GB extra storage via a micro sd card so the newer phones can store plenty of music in FLAC too if you don't want have compressed music. There are some decent FREE apps around that also play FLAC via FOLDERS too -- for phones it's a lot easier (at least I find it a lot easier) to play music via Folders rather than mess around with all sorts of "Play lists", extra tagging / synchronisation etc.

Winamp also works both on Android and Windows phones. -- No more Ipods for me any more. The phone is just as good and with a decent set of Cans (Bose / Sennheiser etc) you can get really good sound if your source is fine. In the latest set of smartphones (HTC/Samsung/Nokia/Motorola Razr --the brand new one) the quality of the DAC is really good - (DAC -- Digital to Analog converter -- this converts the digital signals into analog which is what our ears hear).

The first generation of DAC's in phones were really horrible -- didn't really matter on highly compressed mp3's -- the source wasn't good enough to notice --even at 128 kps compression -- but with FLAC or WAV you do really need a decent DAC as imperfections and sound artifacts can easily be heard.

Cheers

MS have been reamed so many times from so many places and companies for so many things, it's only fair to call foul when other companies are also trying to do those things MS are accused of.

I don't blame MS for doing it either.

Well, google made and announcement about Windows Phones not working with google maps online. Apparently, if you change the User Agent on IE Mobile from Windows Phone to something else, it works. They claim since IE Mobile is not a WebKit browser, it is not supported.

Google's war on Microsoft only results in consumer casualties

Seeing as how google has already said they're not going to be support Windows Phone with their apps, one has to go out on a limb to say that they're drawing a line in the sand. It seems they're looking to lock out google services from being used on Windows Phone. Why? Probably those android royalties, probably that they believe Windows Phone will be serious competition as if an enterprise is already a Microsoft oriented one, a Windows Phone will match better with that versus an android. People that have used Windows 8 and liked it, will go with a Windows Phone more than an android. Just because it has small marketshare right NOW, DOES NOT mean it won't for long. And google is there to try and suffocate it out, with idiotic things like this.

What amateurs! If this were Microsoft, they would had prevented google.com or google docs from being used in IE or in Windows altogether, versus blocking something like not being able to download the homescreen images from Bing.com on a non-IE browser.

I say bring it!

If MS were doing this to Google, Google would be going Ape S--- Crazy.

MS should have tried a bit of reverse psychology and said they won't support those apps if Google doesn't want us to.

Let's be honest here. Does the Windows Phone really, honestly need Android Apps to work on WP? I don't think so.
Not really, if they can get programmers behind the WP device, Googles Apps working on it won't even matter.

Apple and especially Google are quite afraid (yes, they are) of what is coming from MS.

People are tired of the Android phones not working, trust me, they are, people are tired of going out every year to get the latest iPhone just to find out there isn't that much different.

I posted in another thread here about W8 cross platform apps. That is WP8 and W8 strength. And Google knows it.
In other words, any hope of Google getting any kind of cross platform devices going like a Win8 Pro Tablet + Desktop + Phone compatibility are slowly going down the drain. Once W8 (Pro, not just RT) really starts to get out there and people see the capabilities, Android is done. And Google Knows that.

Hi there
on a Windows phone you should be able to get most of what you can do in Windows 8 - so do you really have a problem with Google maps on a Windows 8 phone ??

There are even some "Office clones" out there -- but why would you need a spread sheet on a small smartphone screen.

This whole thread seems to be a cross between serious trolling or just plain moaning for the sake of it.

I'll bet that if I were to be handed a decent NEW windows 8 smartphone tomorrow I could do (albeit a bit differently) everything I currently do on the Samsung Galaxy IIIs running Android v 4.1.1.

A few apps might not be there yet such as using the phone cameras flash as a flashlight but most of the other stuff I could probably find alternative solutions to the google store.

An app giving the times of Local buses in Lima Peru might be a problem but I'm sure if I needed that info I could source it via standard google or elsewhere.

Cheers

Honestly no, Windows Phone doesn't terribly need google's services, as Microsoft already has something of alternatives and better ones at that. They don't however have a YouTube alternative. There isn't any else like it in size and dominance. There is also gmail, many people still rely on that and would expect their new Windows Phone handset to connect to it without issue.

Problem is, google knows that there isn't a YouTube alternative out there, and they think preventing the API use for a dedicated app will ruin the experience. It hasn't, but we don't know the extent of how FAR they're willing to go to prevent ANY third party app on Windows Phone. That's a stickler for UX. It's like how some people choose android over Windows Phone because of instagram or whatever that filth is.

There is also the fact that google will NOT be delivering ANY of their apps over to Windows Phone. Also, Microsoft had to update some Mail app things to allow IMAP access as google is departing from supporting mail apps from Microsoft.

Why would Google waste money on developing apps for MS OS? MS isn't developing Android versions of their software either. And MS has the audacity to nowadays sell 3 different OS (x86, Windows RT, windows 8 mobile) which are not compatible with each other. If they would have one single OS, or at least only 2, more developers would spend time developing.

And MS has such small market share in phones and tablets, why would most developers spend time developing for them if they can develop for iOS and Android with large number of potential costumers?

GM can't be forced to produce spare parts for Ford. Why do we think in the software market the competitors can be forced to cooperate? Each company sells their own products, service and aftermarket products (apps). If MS think they are entitled to a youtube like app, why don't they create a website called MS-tube" and run youtube out of business? i don't recall MS developing browsers with the good of the competition in mind. In fact, MS almost ruined a universally compatible Internet with their non-standard browsers.
