There seems to be some inconsistency with the way the MS tool functions.

I have tested several identical upgrade scenarios and had varying results.

I submitted crash reports.

If you are connected to the net - it will try and update - so it appears MS is making adjustments as they go along.

Back to the problem in the topic, Can't find the option to burn an ISO. Has anyone figured out the reason why Upgrade Assistant doesn't provide the option to create a installation media (USB or DVD) to everyone?!? I had this problem, too. The assistant only has the options "Install now" or "Install later from Desktop" (in the middle should be "Create..."). I tried to re-download Win8-Setup program from the e-mail link from MS, same result.

This problem was solved using SIW2's ESD to ISO-app (THANK YOU _SO_ MUCH! ), I was able to burn the iso and apparently (tested with a VirtualBox Virtual Machine without network) it's totally able to install Windows 8 Pro. Soon trying with the computer, after taking necessary backups.

So I'm just curious, _why the inconsistency in these options_!?

I bought and downloaded the upgrade with my old Acer 1692WLMi laptop, that barely meets the requirements (1Gb RAM and so on), and has an legitimate Win XP Home (32bit) on it.

I am running xp 32-bit and purchased/downloaded Windows 8 Pro upgrade for 39.99. I wanted to install Windows 8 on a second partition. There were only 2 options given - install now or install later from desktop. I chose the second option and now have an icon on the desktop for installing later. I want to keep my xp operating system in a dual boot, but I now realize that option is probably not doable due to license restrictions. I am now considering this next option. I have Vista running on a virtual machine. I could remove the VM and install Vista into a partition. Could I then (from the Vista partition) re-download Windows 8 setup using the email receipt product code, and update Vista to Windows 8 without affecting the XP partition? When I re-download, I assume that I still will not be given the option to obtain an ISO file. Will the 'install now' or 'install from desktop' option from the re-download only install to the Vista partition?

What about upgrading the software? I can confirm that the ESD-to-ISO tool works. I wasn't offered the option to create install media in Upgrade Assistant, either. Check post 4 in this thread as theog above advised.

Hi, I bought Windows 8 upgrade for 39.99 and upgraded to windows 8. But I did not make an .iso backup. Now when I try to re-download with windows8-setup.exe it gives error something like that "it's not available to download for my country". I did tried all suggestions, including comptability, but no result. I have tried with my two PCs. One has windows 7 home premium, other has windows 8 pro. I live in Azerbaijan.
Esd-to-iso.exe cannot find esd files in my pc, it seems that there is no such files. May be after upgrade they were deleted.
I do not want to download iso from torrents, because I don't trust them. I found from internet that Windows8-ProESDwithApps-32bit-EnglishUnitedKingdom-X1816587.esd file can be directly downloaded from microsoft server.

I have several questions:
- how can I solve this re-download problem windows 8 using windows8-setup.exe? or
- can esd-to-iso.exe make iso from Windows8-ProESDwithApps-32bit-EnglishUnitedKingdom-X1816587.esd file directly downloaded from microsoft server, and will this method be legal.

But before writing above post I had tried all suggestions regarding my issue. I cannot re-download because Windows8-setup.exe shows "Windows 8 isn't available for download. Sorry, Windows 8 isn't available for online purchase in the country/region you're in." information.

This link downloads windows 8 setup file. I downloaded this file both from e-mail link and directly microsoft site, but result is the same.

With "ESD-TO-ISO.EXE" I always get the error:
"C:\WIN8x64.iso Not Found Exiting"
(Hidden folder C:\ESD with all files is available; but German download)

Very simple, just run the ESD-TO-ISO.exe . When the iso has been made, it offers to burn to dvd for you.

Suppose you did the download upgrade with clean install? Can you somehow get the needed ESD files back if you didn't save them somewhere?

Thanks much. Yes, I actually had begun downloading an ISO. Just to see how it works. What I ultimately am wondering, though, is what happens if the downloaded ISO lacks UEFI support (as, say hypothetically, my original ISO lacked) and I want to reinstall cleanly under UEFI--using ESD-TO-ISO.exe. I am trying to figure out where I would get the needed ESD folder/files.

Edit: I see the ESD folder is created on my current Win 8 installation. And, ESD-TO-ISO.exe now is making another ISO--adding UEFI support if lacking.

Thank you very much again. We were posting at the same time. Please see my prior post. I used email download link to get Windows8Setup; used that with product key to get ISO*; UEFI'ed the ISO with ESD-to-ISO.exe--which used ESD folder created on my current Win 8 installation.

I do have a question. Did ESD-TO-ISO save the UEFI'ed ISO over the one downloaded--which was just called "Windows." After UEFI'ing this ISO, I don't find a second ISO. At the end of using ESD-TO-ISO, I did not create a DVD. Did I have to do so to save the UEFI'ed ISO?

Still needing some help here. I figured out where the new ISO should have been stored. But, it wasn't there. OK, so I ran ESD-TO-ISO.exe again. All seemed to go fine--again. But, I took the additional step of trying to burn the ISO to DVD--using ESD-TO-ISO.exe. Unfortunately, I was told that the ISO is invalid. Again the ISO, valid or not, is not where it is supposed to be. Maybe I don't know how to find C:\WIN8x86.ISO. Any thoughts? Possibilities for what went wrong in creating a valid ISO: 1) Ran processes on 32-bit machine (don't think this is the answer); 2) created ESD folder on machine already running Win8--specifically, 32 bit (better idea, but probably not the answer either); and 3) my old HP laptop hates me, but it shouldn't. I've resurrected it for using Win8. Be back in awhile to see your thoughts. Here are some snips:

It should be on your drive in plain sight.

If you can't see it, just type .iso or win8x86 into whatever file search program you use - I use Everything search engine. Everything Search Engine

I greatly appreciate your help. Here is what I did to follow a "certain" process from start to finish (going to be precise so you have the best shot at figuring out what might have gone wrong--have noted the possible explanations you gave above).

1) I used "here" on my receipt and product key from the purchase of Win8 Pro 32 bit to download Windows8-Setup.
2) I used Windows8-Setup to download "Windows" Disk Image File (i.e., ISO). See snip.
3) The ESD folder/files appeared at Computer > C: > ESD--on my already installed Win8 Pro system.
4) I unzipped ESD-TO-ISO (compressed (zipped) folder) and extracted ESD-TO-GO.exe (3.9.2012.730).
5) I ran ESD-TO-GO.exe. It immediately found the ESD files and began it's work properly as far as I could tell.
6) From the snips in my prior post, you can see that ESD-TO-GO.exe appeared to create Win8x86.iso, but I could not find it at C:\WIN8x86.ISO. I already have done the searches you mention in your second post.
7) I tried to burn the hopefully created ISO to disc. The second snip below indicates to be what I though was success in having a bead on Win8x86.iso. But, as indicated earlier, I was told that "The selected disk image file is not valid" when I tried to burn it. Maybe the file was not actually "bead on."

And, as you may have inferred, the point of my exercise was to see if I could obtain the needed ESD folder (files) on a machine already running Win8 Pro--that would lead ultimately to the creation of an ISO that would have full EFI and BIOS support.

Incidentally, my "Windows" ISO download is 2.07 GB, while my original upgrade ISO download is 2.23 GB.
