well i do it so they don't bug me with questions which in a way is quite self serving at the same time as being helpfull xd

I do like windows 8 but i'm not blind to it's flaws either, the start menu for example took me all of about 2 min to get used to, i didn't mind it at all in terms of looks but the lack of features and inability to resize the apps left me bored with it, i've been using it for some time now as well, i just tried out the shell start menu app which gives you the classic start menu, nice to try out and i offer it to my customers as an option but i'll be taking it off myself as i'm not bothered by the metro ui, thats on my lappy though.

my desktop doesn't have windows 8 on it, at least not yet anyway, waiting for my little leap motion to get shipped next month so i can avoid touch screen.

Best fix I've come across for replacing Metro start menu is Ex7ForW8, really does give you back the original win 7 start menu, you also get the option to switch between start menu UI's, so all I'm looking for now is for someone to port the aero glass, and we'll be fine for the time being....................

Well from my cyber surfing, I have come to the conclusion that Microsoft have well and truly pissed a lot of customers, with this version of windows, this Win 8 I'll put money on will be the biggest pass over, yet!................

i guess we will find out if microsoft are listening or not, this one size fits all o/s is taking a lot of flak, some for good reason and some of it is just wild conjecture and misdirection to plug something else.

The biggest annoyance for me with Win 8 besides the little stuff, knowing it will continue be improved, or that maybe I don't understand reasons for some things yet, is the inability to copy and paste in the Modern UI. For instance I'm looking at a lens on Ebay and I want to know more about it, so I try to copy the name of the lens to paste it into a search browser, without having to type the name out.

I also do not understand what the purpose of docking the desktop to the side and then when using the Start screen it knocks it out of docking... then what is the docking of desktop for? We need both sides at once and ability to copy and paste in Modern UI.

The desktop programs run on a X86 operating system and the Modern UI runs in a RT VM running on your machine and Microsoft has not figured out how to talk to each other very well yet.

As I explained. I am in an APP for instance EBAY I search a lens type and see a listing and want to copy the name, and paste it in the browser back on desktop to search the lens and see reviews etc. None of the apps I've tried, respond to the usual right click and Copy>>>left click Paste, except in some forms I believe. Tell me there is a setting to enable this I've been to busy to search answers on it.

Another example, you are in Netflix or some other movie app and you want to browse the move title for reviews etc. Apps don't respond to the right clicks and give us a regular menu...I use copy and paste as much as possible to save time typing.

Well that certainly has to be fixed. I don't mind dumbed down little tablets but when using a real computer I cant be dumbed down with pretty tile colors and loss of function. I am confident MS will fix these annoyances with the desktop + Tiles and APPS integration.

BTW, the more I use Win8, the more I like it! I do have the "crutch" installed (Classic Shell), so I'm not using the Metro side very much, but once a day or so I venture over there and play a bit. I use my PC for work, so I need to remain as productive as possible and Win8 with Classic Shell works for me!

Sort-of. Whether or not you can cut and paste in a desktop app isn't normally a function of how it's written by the application developer as much as it is the custom control in use. Most custom controls that display a text field will allow selection for the clipboard: even many read-only custom controls allow for this. If the text is rendered in a graphics control, however, that will generally limit the ability to cut and paste because there isn't really a "text" field there. Label controls generally don't allow cut and paste either but this isn't an attribute that's controlled at the coding level for the developer, it's an attribute of the type of control it is.

I know ... I'm being nit-picky but I thought I'd clarify a bit.

You do realize that someone must write those controls, right? You do realize the developer has the choice of which controls to use, and as such if they want a field to be selectable, they have to make a choice to use a method that allows selection.

Maybe I wasn't clear Mystere. I guess what I meant to say is that an application in the desktop environment must be deliberately written to disable cut-and-paste (text boxes, list boxes, etc.) by trapping some of the keyboard events. The default state of most custom controls I've used do not default to the disabled state for cut & paste. I haven't seen a property on a custom control that actually disables it, you have to write the event-handler code to trap it, which most developers don't do. Does that make more sense?

I don't know the situation in the Metro with regards to that, though I've picked up that it has less utility in that regard.

No, Max. You're simply wrong about this.

Yes, it's true that controls that support text input have selectable text, but there are many other kinds of controls. For instance, Drop Down Lists, Listboxes, ListViews, Buttons, Labels, etc.. all of which do not support selecting the text. Only Textboxes, support selecting text by default, almost every other kind of control does not.

As an example, you can't select the text in a titlebar, you can't select the text in a status bar, you can't select the text for most things in any given dialog box, other than text boxes.
