Hi all
I know this is a little picky but I just feel that Microsoft put nothing into making its new name for the OS, I think that windows 8 just sounds a little lame and rubbish :(
Let me know what you think :)

Why not? Before came 7, now we have 8. Better than XP (is this an RPG?) or Vista (how about Panorama?)

Funny, I don't know, it's ok I guess. Why not? Is Windows 7 lame and rubbish?
Maybe silly to call it Windows Tiles, or Microsoft OS8, or Windows Imagination?

Maybe they should have called XP -> Windows 5, and Vista -> Windows 6.

XP = eXPerience
Vista = Longhorn
Windows 7 = Vienna

idk whats for Windows 8

Actually, XP was code named Whistler.

And Windows 7... well, that's kind of a long story. Technically, the product that became Windows 7 was code named Windows 7 also. However, there's more to the story.

Originally, it was called Blackcomb, and it was supposed to be the next release after XP (it was supposed to come about 3 years after), but the infamous 2003 Memo from Bill Gates on Security changed everything. Essentially, most of the programmers were diverted to work on Winodws Server 2003 and XP SP2. A small team of developers were left to work on specific technologies, and to create an "interim release" called Longhorn.

Whistler and Blackcomb are mountains in British Columbia that also happen to be popular skiing destinations. Longhorm is the name of a drinking establishment (bar) that sits between the two mountains. So you can see the correlation. Longhorn was always supposed to be an interim release, due to the lack of resources assigned to Blackcomb. After the also-infamous "Longhorn Reset", Blackcomb had lost a lot of what it was supposed to be (particularly the loss of WinFS) so they briefly renamed it "Vienna", but that didn't stick. Shortly afterwards it was renamed to the code name of Windows 7.

From the Wikipedia entry on Windows 7:

Originally, a version of Windows codenamed Blackcomb was planned as the successor to Windows XP (codename Whistler) and Windows Server 2003. Major features were planned for Blackcomb, including an emphasis on searching and querying data and an advanced storage system named WinFS to enable such scenarios. However, an interim, minor release, codenamed "Longhorn," was announced for 2003, delaying the development of Blackcomb.

By the middle of 2003, however, Longhorn had acquired some of the features originally intended for Blackcomb. After three major viruses exploited flaws in Windows operating systems within a short time period in 2003, Microsoft changed its development priorities, putting some of Longhorn's major development work on hold while developing new service packs for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Development of Longhorn (Windows Vista) was also restarted, and thus delayed, in August 2004. A number of features were cut from Longhorn.

Blackcomb was renamed Vienna in early 2006 and again renamed Windows 7 in 2007. In 2008, it was announced that Windows 7 would also be the official name of the operating system. There has been some confusion over naming the product Windows 7, while versioning it as 6.1 to indicate its similar build to Vista and increase compatibility with applications that only check major version numbers, similar to Windows 2000 and Windows XP both having 5.x version numbers.
