Windows 8 gaining market share

With the launch of Windows 8 Consumer Preview on February 29, 2012, millions are already using the latest Microsoft operating system every day. The new operating system is reported to be an elegant re-imagination of Windows, carefully blending the existing mobile and desktop operating system experience. Chitika Insights has been following the progress of the Windows 8 launch dating back to 2011, when usage was significantly below the newly touted levels. Now that the Windows 8 Consumer Preview has had some time to gain a foothold in the market, Chitika Insights has conducted a new research study to determine its current rate of adoption in the U.S and Canada.

Windows 7 was the "promised savior" from Vista. Windows 8, on the other hand is another Vista, and if we take into account the UI, it's worse than Vista.

Another thing to consider is that Windows 8 is much better protected against unauthorized use than Windows 7 was, so a lot of would-be adopters are waiting until a solution is found for that. Windows 7, by comparison was similar enough to Vista for enthusiasts to quickly find a way to "liberate" it of any usage restrictions very fast, so users felt more secure when they knew the OS they are installing today won't go into lockdown 30 days later with no going back. Vista adoption rates were also slow until Microsoft lowered the defenses at the beginning due to a court order.

That's all there is to say. W7 is more popular than W8.

Hi there
Not wishing to get into this type of discussion but even TODAY XP is still more popular than EITHER W7 or W8.

You can't judge these statistics on numbers of computers sold -- many people I know still have stuff running from around 2002 etc.

Cheers

It depends on which site you get the figures from (and how they gather their data).

Here are the results from 3 sites:

I'm surprised that 7 has past xp. Most people I know still haven't moved off of xp unless they had to buy a new machine and most of them have not had to.

I'm not sure if those sets of figures are all US only, all Worldwide or some combination of US and Worldwide.

I am truly skeptical about these stats. Licenses sold is simply not "copies in use". Easy as that.

"Then there was the man who drowned crossing a stream with an average depth of six inches."
W. I. E. Gates

W3C seem to come closer to the truth, but still, this is based on what their web counters see, so take it with a grain of salt. We will never know the true numbers.

That doesn't ...

Last time I checked, Windows 8 was not released...

That doesn't stop people from using W8 (DP, CP, RP and Ent) to surf the Internet.

W7 wasn't released until Oct 22, 2009.

According to NetMarketShare:
  • Windows 7 had a 1% market share at the 1st of September 2009.
  • Windows 8 has a 0.25% market share (currently)

It's now the 4th most widely used Windows OS (according to NetMarketShare).

Therefore:

The W8 (Betas) only have a fraction of the popularity that the W7 (Betas) enjoyed (according to NetMarketShare).
