Oops, I didn't realize that Win8 comes with Defender that really doesn't require additional AV apps (as far as I can tell). I'll test the Defender against some malware this weekend (it's what I do for a living), then see if Defender can really keep the PC secure...

Test it. Want to bet me it WILL not give you fully secure computer(s)? At VERY best it will give you watered down protection. YOU would be better off with retail protection, examples would be BullGuard, Nortons, AVG Security Suite (Note this is not the free version).

+1.. I plan on using that as well. I've used it before and had great success. I'm using Avast right now but when I go to the RTM I'll get a copy of Kaspersky.

I'll get the latest, greatest Symantec product because of the enterprise license we have at work, so I'll test Symantec's products (and McAfee's) as soon as they are given to me. Right now at home, I use Microsoft Security Essentials and it's served us well for over 2 years. No malware has gotten through...yet...

Were you aware that being RIGHT here you are chancing an infection? Believe it of not, even what you might think is a chatter/poster can very well be collecting information about your computer(s). Once even a IP Address is gathered, the person(s) can very well break into your network, and *I* know you believe you have the most sophisticated password ever created on the planet Earth. Guess WHAT. Be aware that Symantec has released the 2013 version of its products and they are very buggy and a lot of complaints on their forum. I am sticking with NIS 2012 for now and it runs great on Windows 8 RTM. Will wait a few months until Symantec gets its problems solved with the 2013 release.

Jim? I'm one of the beta testers for the latest release of Nortons 360, and the product is rock solid. I'm assuming you are talking about another Norton/Symantec product that had beta testers that didn't do crap, so they later on under what those beta testers told them released a not ready for prime time solution. BUT you have my word on it that you are totally protected using Norton 360. Of course that means you also cannot go looking to get yourself infect. I beta tested for Norton Internet Security and follow that section of the forum. Lots of complaints about NIS 2013 and NAV 2013. I'll let you inform us on Norton 360 as I don't use it and don't follow it on the forum.

I'm one of those guys with W Defender only and so far there were no weird things recorded here.
Using custom Chromium browser with adblock and IE10 has an enhanced tracking list.

But I'll be on guarding mode when browsing around.

I already got a browser hijack (V9 search) from somewhere and Windows Defender didn't catch it. I'll be running the Symantec Endpoint Protection v12 as soon as I receive the Windows 8 package from Symantec. The SEPv12 (RU1MP1 build) that we use at Ford for office and home use causes a BSOD after installation...

If looking to where it goes, then why was I the only voter for the second option? MSE + 3rd party firewall.

If there will be no such a thing as total security, leaving built-in firewall can be a better option I guess.

OOT: This remind me about a movie story of Jason Bourne dealing with Treadstone and Blackbriar ops in which for the sake of national security CIA is breaking into all available network from Langley to Europe.

Right now I'm using free Avast and so far so good. When I get the RTM on the 26th I will either keep the free Avast or upgrade to kaspersky. Defender is nice but I just rather use a better third party tool for this. My 2c. YMMV
