This is why I believe Windows 8 will be a success.*

Does anyone remember 'Minority Report'? If so, do you remember how the character was using gestures ( Kinect anyone) and tiles to peruse through the information? That was in 2002, sometimes real life does mimic fiction ( or was it completely?) I remember many people say they wished to be able to navigate.
People have had mostly negative things to say about Windows since MS moved away from the beloved XP. Compared to all OS's since, XP sucks. (even Vista) If you do not like change, don't. Stay in the 2000s and get left behind. The tech world is changing and developing even faster than it has in the past, and IMHO, for the better.
Windows 8 is just the next step in making our world even more interactive with the objects around us. We are getting curved monitors with edge to edge display and native display support for more than 2 monitors. Touch screen interaction that was realistically unheard of a few years ago.

Remember,
Roughly 90% of the people on this planet are common everyday users and it is our JOB to enable their use of technology easier with what WE are given to work with by those that develop the tools.

You just need to set your mind that I will give it my happiest best effort.

Of course, I have been using tiles for almost 2 years on my Windows Phone 7/7.5

You need to be more open minded pparks1. How do you know that in 10 years you won't be managing a data center with a Minority Report type setup AND getting pretty good excercise too? Heck, you may even have a few Cogs in a bath helping you to determine why your SAN infrastructure failed. lol.

Marketing Hype vs Facts

Microsoft has a right to "add features" and "remove features" to its OS even if many disapprove.

I don't remember saying that they didn't.

IMO and that of a most (all?) of my friends, hype is what you use to sell a product, when you can't announce any real benefits/features/improvements.
There is a big difference between "Marketing Hype" and "User Word-of-Mouth Hype".

As I'm sure you're aware, I don't like Metro, but I have stated multiple times that there are actual improvements in the "Real" Windows code.

Here are 4 factual statements that MS could have pushed just as easily:
  • Faster boot up, improved performance and smaller resource footprint
  • More Secure
  • Runs on existing Vista or W7 PCs
  • Upgrade your old XP, Vista or W7 operating system for $40 (genuine Product Key required)

Note:
I know there are more features, but I don't consider most of them to be improvements.
IMO, a least one "improvement" is actually a degradation.

Do you get CSI: Miami in Australia? I would like to know what kind of OS they use. It probably does not exist.

CSI: (insert City name)?
I think they are shown here (I don't watch them).

Digital authentic design is taking the RGB pixels on the screen and using those pixel colors.

Every computer I've ever used has been "digitally authentic":
  • Apple IIe
  • Commodore 64
  • BBC
  • IBM Clone
  • Archimedes
  • Amiga
  • Macintosh
  • My last 4 PCs

I like CSI:Miami because they give the appearance of having an awesome computer system to work with. I don't believe all the hype. Good hype, bad hype, whatever, it's just a sales pitch. And it's all legal. You don't like the metro and I don't like UNIX or Apple. I don't even like smartphones because their contracts are just too expensive for me and I don't need them. A simple tracfone is all I need (40 bucks for the phone and about 5 dollars a month to use - no data - no video - no apps) Windows 8 will succeed because of physics in the marketplace, its inertia will carry it forward. The reviews have not been all bad. There is a tremendous amount of negative hype out there but not enough to stop 8 from being successful. Microsoft's advertising division has proffered adequate details to the general public at their website and at their conferences and elsewhere to display their new product's capabilities. They have an entire BUILD expo circuit to demo and present their products. In an attempt to make the transition easier, 8 has been readily available to use for a full year now. Running 8 in a virtual box is not really the best testing platform. Dual booting has caused all kinds of problems, most of which are from installer errors. Also insisting on using high powered graphics cards that have not been certified as compatible creates problems and frustration. Some testers have inadequate screen resolutions, or they want to install hardware or software that is not currently compatible with Windows 8. There are many irritants that have ticked people off including the commercial aspect of the metro or the metro UI itself which many cannot stand. Even so, there is not enough negative momentum out there to stop 8 from succeeding. The legal hype of any enterprise is a matter of interpretation and is subject to ethical standards and regulation that keeps it legal.

There is a big difference between "Marketing Hype" and "User Word-of-Mouth Hype".

Personally, I don't think Windows 8 is a product that requires hype to succeed. I think it is a good solid desktop Operating System and can succeed by virtue of its design and flexibility to be used in business and elsewhere. My inference about the inertia relates to the fact that 400+ million copies of 8 will be deployed to OEM's worldwide. That's a lot of gravity! Does hype = advertising? The source of the hype shouldn't matter so much as the content. Effective advertising is more ethical than small talk.

The iPhone will sell because it's a fashion item.
Also, a lot of people who buy Apple products are fanatics (they'll buy anything with an Apple logo on it).

My inference about the inertia relates to the fact that 400+ million copies of 8 will be deployed to OEM's worldwide.

Inertia?
I must have missed that.

Effective advertising is more ethical than small talk.

Ethical?
Is that why ads for credit cards have "0% interest" in giant type and the fine print (4px high for 1 or 2 seconds) says "actual interest rate 20%"?

Is that why the iPod ads show people doing all sorts of fantastic activities with a single finger press and the fine print says "sequence shortened"?

I trust my friends opinions over the info supplied by companies and marketing agencies.

Marketing agencies are not giving their opinion. They are subject to standards and practices regulations. To be successful, as Windows 8 will be, a company must be honest, fair, have transparency and be responsible. A point of view is not subject to business laws.

Apple wasn't running around touting that they invented 4G, or saying they were the first to build a phone with a bigger screen. They said that you could now have an iPhone with 4GB as well as a bigger screen. Many iPhones users are completely satisfied and don't want their precious phone overhauled, but 4G and a bigger screen will certainly make them happier as well as having a lighter and smaller model. Why wouldn't Apple fans be delighted?

The only thing that most iPhone users are satisfied of is that it's a new iPhone and buy it with blinders on. For $199 on contract there are better phones but because they don't have Apple logos they just aren't any good. Apple has always been a great company at marketing their products, hence the reason they no longer have to make a great product to sell it. Apple knows that there are millions brainwashed by their product hype and that they can make little changes yearly and resell the same product. Apple could have put LTE support in the 4S, but then they wouldn't have something to show for the iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 could have had NFC, but then they need that for the 5S next year. It's been this way since the first iPod went on sale, just funny and sad how many naive people there.

This is true, apple can say that they're releasing something and what they literally release is nothing, yet there will be people that will actually buy nothing.

And as for the iphone as a fashion item, fashion trends don't last forever.

The start-up times for W8 over W7 is a notable improvement. Benchmarks I've read comparing W7 vs. W8 show improvements in all respects. Even if you don't use the tablet functionality, it looks like it'll be a welcome improvement. Yeah, some of the interface changes are peculiar compared to how things have worked before, but as 3rd party floating toolbars become available and other customizations, I'm sure you'll be able to adjust the interface to your liking.

Well, in all fairness, I've had blackberries and droids, while my wife has had her single Apple iPhone 3GS. Unlike my phones that have occasionally required a battery pull to get working properly, that has NEVER once had to happen with her iPhone. Her phone has continued to run smooth and fast for the past 3.5 years, but my Droid on the other hand has certainly slowed down and seems to just sort of lock up and freeze from time to time.

My wife has been thinking about other phones for a while now to replace her aging iPhone 3GS. She has considered the Samsung Galaxy S3 (too big), and the Motorola Razr/Razr Maxx. But at the end of the day, she just cannot bring herself to buy the Droid based phone as she hates my droid (Motorola Droid 2), and she feels she would just miss having her iPhone...which has been outstanding for her for the past 3.5 years.

My Windows Phone hasn't ever needed a reboot to get working again so far, and it's been about six months almost. Some others report the same. Interesting pparks1 that your wife's 3GS still runs fine as I know someone that has one that they feel runs slow.

Well, some people runs tons and tons of stuff on their devices and install a billion applications. That doesn't describe my wife, so perhaps she has kept hers running more efficiently.

I had an iPhone 3GS, at the time it was the best phone on the market, Android didn't exist and my provider didn't have a decent Windows Mobile phone device. The phone ran well enough but had to be reboot at least monthly and at times it would just reboot on it's own while being charged. I then installed iOS 4 on it and it was downhill from there, multiple reboots, poor performance and when WP7 came out I dumped it. I've had WP7 since release Oct 2010, I might have rebooted it a couple of times since other than when doing software updates. If your wife is looking at possibly replacing her 3GS tell her to look at WP8 when it's released, she may be surprised.

My wife has been waiting for a new phone for quite a while. She skipped the iPhone 4 and 4s because of the glass back. Unsure she is going to wait longer for Windows 8.

As a therapist who works in a school with Austistic kids. They use iPhone and iPad apps there pretty extensively. I see almost no possibility of her doing anything but an iPhone. She will be 100% satisfied.

Different in the US?

Marketing agencies are not giving their opinion. They are subject to standards and practices regulations. To be successful, as Windows 8 will be, a company must be honest, fair, have transparency and be responsible. A point of view is not subject to business laws.

Marketing agencies give the opinion of the company that commissioned the ad.
Like all projects, the company that commissioned the ad must sign a legal document saying that they approve of the content.

In Australia, Apple got sued over misleading iPhone ads (about 4G) and lost, not the marketing agency.

Maybe it is different in the US.

United States v. Microsoft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

languages.jpg

I wish there could be an Operating System made in Europe called Eurosoft Corporation (not the PC diagnostic software company), or one in Australia called Aboriginal Software (not the shareware company). Why can't the Chinese make an OS for their country? Maybe they do? I do not know? Or the Germans > Germansoft! Inc. (not the website developers) I don't like that, Microsoft, from Redmond, Washington, has to provide the world with an Operating System that attempts to be usable, agreeable, up to date and profitable for use by everyone everywhere. Market trends have shown that a flat pure desktop only has no growth potential or innovation. A flat pure desktop only is a utensil. Many would prefer the Microsoft Utensil OS. Got UNIX? I suppose Microsoft could choose to not be a global provider, but could they do that? Could they stop selling to Europeans? Or Asians? Is Windows 8 a clever ploy to steal? Is Windows 8 a ludicrous waste of talent? Does it make sense to market a commercially driven for profit OS in countries that have economic strife? How about a Global Operating System made by Globesoft Inc. (not the Swedish technology company) Or is that Apple? These massive enterprises tend to get sued all the time because they are a huge target. Are they good? Is there evil in the world? Are they swindlers? Are they con artists? Is there a conspiracy to deceive? I think MS is just a software company that tries to be profitable, and sometimes they are unable to. Lots of people in America and from other geopolitical locations around the planet distrust wealth. Is Microsoft greedy? Should they be ruined? Lawsuits happen all the time because certain entities have a grievance. Marketing agencies are paid to produce a product that is, "like you said," the opinion of the enterprise seeking to advertise something. So there is no perfection, people are not always right and not always wrong. I just today heard of a company being sued for deceptive marketing practices on the radio. They deny the charges and will seek a resolution to clear their name brand and reputation. It is all very messy. Getting into business these days is not an easy task. There are any number of organizations that will always seek to get their piece of the pie. And Microsoft has to code their Operating Systems User Interfaces to languages around the world. Imagine how many offices and personnel that requires! Who were the first to attempt to kill the metro? The Chinese. Will Windows 8 be successful in Romania? In Poland? In Korea? In Russia? In Greece? I do not know. Perhaps it could be successful in the United States but all bets are off. The Windows Store is getting loaded with multi language apps now. They could be interesting but I don't really need apps from Korea, Thailand, Russia or India! And the desktop is still there as an upgrade of Windows 7. It may not be very well received, but I still think Windows 8 will be successful down the road. Updates and patches, service packs and more will happen as it has always happened.
