And maybe a host of new GPUs ... DX - whatever ready ?

It doesn't really matter what DX version MS releases until their real next-gen console is eventually released. (Fingers crossed that they aren't planning on sticking with DX11 based GPU's )

Even then PC games will be limited to that particular DX version for that consoles life span as newer DX versions, cards and OS'es evolve while consoles remain 'feature locked'.

Just like the current Status Quo of predominately DX 9 titles with tacked on DX 11 features.

At least there are more titles with tacked on DX11 than there were for DX10. However it's still nowhere near the hyperbole that DX11 promised PC gaming.

I'd like to see newer DX versions be somehow much better utilized for more non-gaming tasks (ie OS GUI mega eye candy, Browser mega eye candy etc).

At least that way PC users won't be stuck using cards technically two steps ahead with capabilities that rarely get used.

I don't any real need to buy any DX12 card since most games use DX9/10

A fair amount of games that had DX10 support added, also support DX11.

Those that don't support DX11 are games that were developed prior to DX11 being released or were too late in the development cycle to re-code to add DX11 features.

As already outlined in a previous post, what DX version which matters the most is the DX version that the next round games consoles will use because that will become the new 'DX9' for years to come.

Unless they find a use outside of gaming for cards with higher hardware support features than consoles, PC GPU's will always be ahead with under-utilized features.

All you need for Windows 8 would be a solid DX 11 card that does what you need it to do for what you do.
Ray tracing would be nice for DX 12 though.

Microsoft DirectX 11.1 and DirectX 12 rumors

Apparently, with the help of AMD and NVIDIA, company is working on two
versions separately. According to the scenario A, the next version of DirectX
will be revealed next and not this year, as some sites suggest that is 2011.
Likely, it will happen during the Gamefest 11 event. Let’s just say late Q2 of
2011. Therefore, you can expect next generation of GPUs from both AMD and NVIDIA
to fully support DirectX 11.1 features. What is more interesting is the fact that
version 11.1 might be canned and merged with the DirectX 12, in case plans don’t
go as expected. However, if DirectX 11.1 is merged with DirectX 12, year 2012 is
when you can expect new GPUs with such support, which are AMD Radeon HD 8000 and
NVIDIA Maxwell.

Better hair effects. I want my character to have natural moving hair instead of these plastic tops that are common today!

IS there any way that you could give video games more tessellation, so the characters, environment could look more Cinematic in there appearance,to the video games that need it!!

likes others have said a new directx is pointless until we get a new generation of consoles. while i do not think we will get a new generation of consoles this year i would be shocked if we didnt have a new generation of consoles by holiday 2012

this would also coincide with the possible release of windows 8 (which would in theory have a new directx)

personally, if windows 8 does support a new directx (as does the new generation of consoles) microsoft shouldnt release another directx until we get a new generation of consoles. whats the point of having a new directx when all the game devolopers are developing for the consoles? all it does is make people angry that we have all these features which are simply going to waste.

as for features of a new directx i would like to see:

1) more advanced tesselation
2) a physics engine built in (this was we would have a more unified approach to physics so developers might actually use it)
3) 3D support (guarentee if microsoft is smart they will support 1080P 120 frames per second)
4) Better support for multiple video cards

as for ray tracing.. it would be nice to see but i still dont think even by the end of next year we would have graphics cards powerful enough to render ray tracing in realtime (especially at high resolutions) and even if you could it would probably have to be a monster tri sli system or something like that. havent heard much about ray tracing in while so i could be wrong

Pc more tessllation

Directx 12 could enhance the pc world because processors are 4 and 6 core, gpu's are getting better and faster as well, so why not microsoft give it to the pc world because consoles are falling behind what i mean by that is the developer as not upgraded the console, "way make pc wait", the consoles would have to do some catch up thats all!!!!

The only difference that I have noticed between dx10 & dx11 is that the 2nd one is only sharper which is basically the tessilation.
DX11 is still fresh as hot buns and many games are produced in the latter between 4 of direct x version (9c/10/10.1/11).
DX12? That's not coming out anytime soon, neither is Windows 8.

One of the problems currently is also that many games are made for consoles and then quickly ported over to PC without adding new technology. That can be one of the reasons that many new games are not DX11.

That's precisely it. Good example: Crysis 2. This is why they need to stop making console games to put pressure on Sony and Microsoft to make newer consoles. But, that's a debate for another topic as well. Really though, it's the console market that's slowing things down because developers will still make console ports.

I dont see a need to launch DX12 now, 90% of the gaming market uses DX9/10 and only a few offers a fully support to DX11. It appears to me it is only a matter of propaganda to sell more video cards/operating systems.
