HELP
I have a toshiba laptop running windows 8. I went to delete photos off a usb when my laptop froze. I turned off the laptop by the power button waited, then when I turned the laptop back on it came up with the message

a disk read error occurred press ctrl alt del to restart

Each time I press ctrl alt del it returns to this message. I can only go to F2 or F12. I know a little about computers but not enough to fix something like this. All replies would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time

Welcome to EightForums, ariaza.

It's a USB thumb drive I assume. I suggest to unplug the drive, then try to reboot.

Sounds like your hard disk crashed. Bring it to a shop.

Thanks, Mystere. I suppose there's no way he can test with exterior equipment?

I know it's something you may not want to hear, ariaza, but Mystere is probably correct. He's more savvy at this stuff than I.

Please report back what happens.

Well, certainly, there are ways to test if you are savvy enough. But if you're savvy enough, you probably know them already. Maybe you've got a neighborhood geek that can help you out ;)

The easiest way to test the hard drive is to put it in another computer... You can also listen to it careful, and listen for "clicking" or other strange noises.

A lot of people have had boot issues with W8. This is a post I just did in another thread on this forum. Click --> here. I also got the error message: "No disk detected", but there was nothing wrong with the disc. Do you have a windows installation disc, or third party partition manager CD, that you can put in your burner and boot off? This would detect and show your HD if it's still operable. Also maybe a friend could help you re-set your BIOS to default. Do you know how to remove the battery pack? If so, take it out, and leave it out for awhile to let all residual current drain, and then replace and restart which I have found sometimes helps in situations like this.

The head slamming against the platter ticking. Not a pleasant sound! I had that happen once on a slave drive. I intuitively knew that something was wrong and sure enough -> Trashed. I was using it for backing up. Luckily I had a spare to replace.

The worst sound is the sound of silence when you hit the start button and you can smell that electrical burning odour. Like I did after an electrical storm had passed.

Hi HippsieGypsie and Mustang
I do have a friend that is great with computers. He came and helped me. I have an external hard drive that I keep all my important photos, documents on, so we just put windows 8 back on the laptop from scratch and it worked.

I now have a fully functional laptop again.

Thank you for both answering my queries.

Cheers
ariaza

I'm glad you got going. You should not have had to reinstall from scratch, there are several disk checking programs you can use from a boot disk. You can get them all from Hirens Boot Disk, or you can download them individually. GWscan can repair most seagate and WD drives, the seagate disk scanner works well in both dos and GUI mode. western digital uses a program similar to GWscan. For hitachi, samsung and Toshiba, use their tools.

If this happens again we'll help you make a boot disk with the drive scanner on it.

Just to be safe, you should run a full CHKDSK in windows 8, on all visible partitions, there may still be an inconsistency in the drive.
