The worst sound is the sound of silence when you hit the start button and you can smell that electrical burning odour. Like I did after an electrical storm had passed.

    Hi HippsieGypsie and Mustang
I do have a friend that is great with computers. He came and helped me. I have an external hard drive that I keep all my important photos, documents on, so we just put windows 8 back on the laptop from scratch and it worked.

I now have a fully functional laptop again.

Thank you for both answering my queries.

    Cheers

    I'm glad it wasn't a hard drive.

I have a dell laptop running windows 8. I went to delete photos off a usb when my laptop froze. I turned off the laptop by the power button waited, then when I turned the laptop back on it came up with the message

a disk read error occurred press ctrl alt del to restart

Each time I press ctrl alt del it returns to this message. I can only go to F2 or F12. I know a little about computers but not enough to fix something like this. All replies would be greatly

    Thanks for your time[/QUOTE]

I'm glad you got going. You should not have had to reinstall from scratch, there are several disk checking programs you can use from a boot disk. You can get them all from Hirens Boot Disk, or you can download them individually. GWscan can repair most seagate and WD drives, the seagate disk scanner works well in both dos and GUI mode. western digital uses a program similar to GWscan. For hitachi, samsung and Toshiba, use their tools.

If this happens again we'll help you make a boot disk with the drive scanner on it.

Just to be safe, you should run a full CHKDSK in windows 8, on all visible partitions, there may still be an inconsistency in the drive.
