    Windows 8 RP Upgrade?

I thought I read somewhere that users of Win 8 RP would be given a discount when upgrading to Windows 8 Pro.

I can't seem to find any reference to such a thing. Help anybody?

    Thanks, Jim

Hello Jim, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I found this, but it looks like that is only for the official Windows 8 testers and not general public.

Microsoft confirms Windows 8 testers to get $40 upgrade price, too | ZDNet

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

I have to disagree. There are no "official testers". Anyone that has Windows 8 RP on their system should qualify for the upgrade. This link explains the procedure and a comment by the blogger clarifies the RP upgrade.

Upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $39.99

Yes, sure you can upgrade from Windows RP to RTM as quoted there, but I don't see anywhere in that quote or in the article that you will get the discounted price for Windows 8 RTM if all you have is Windows RP and not a license (key number) for one the Windows below.

Starting at general availability, if your PC is running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 you will qualify to download an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for just $39.99 in 131 markets.

    Thanks for the replies.

A related question: My Win 8 RP is installed in VirtualBox. I also have a Windows XP installation in VirtualBox. Would I install Win8 Pro in the Win 8 RP installation? I suppose I will still need the Win XP key?

    Thanks for any advice, Jim

You are right, you need to own a key for XP, Vista or W7 to qualify for the upgrade price. You need to have a previous version installed to do the upgrade and RP meets that requirement also (providing you have a valid key for one of the other versions). How it checks for the required key when all you have installed at the time is RP is a mystery. It may ask for the key or it may assume you have one. I guess we will see on Oct 26 when someone tries the upgrade from RP.

I think I read somewhere that you need an XP, Vista or 7 key to upgrade to the full retail version. How it will check, I have no clue.

I suppose that you may need to provide the key number in the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant (from Windows.com) to qualify to purchase Windows 8 RTM at the discounted price if a qualifying activated Windows was not already installed. We shall see indeed.

OK guys, thanks for the clarification.

Any thoughts about installations in VirtualBox?

Should be the same as long as you have a qualifying activated Windows installed to upgrade from to Windows 8 RTM.
