Windows 8 - Couple of Questions

    Hi,
Just got Windows 8 Pro from Dreamspark a couple of days ago. I have done a clean install and everything is working fast and smooth.

Just a quick question about the Windows 8 Start Screen.

    - By default, if I want to go to the start screen from Desktop I have to scroll the mouse in lower left corner and click. I was wondering if there's a way to permanently pin the Start Screen icon to the taskbar so I can see it at all times? Since currently it is hidden, I sometimes click the File Explorer icon instead of Start Screen.

    - Secondly, when I did a clean install I removed all previous partitions, including the one with the factory image which came when I bought the PC few years ago. Windows 8 did not create a partition for Factory image, does that mean I will have to re-install from the bootable DVD that I created if I encounter a problem in the future?

    Thanks.

    Welcome to forum.

For switching between Desktop and Start Screen, just click on ''Windows'' button.

    Yep, or bootable usb drive.

    Hi

    Welcome to EightForums!

There was an executable a while back called "metrostart8" (MetroStart 8 -- Shawn46.webs.com) and you had choices between orbs and looks:
    Missing Start Button Workaround

Now there is also another way with a script and you can assign any icon to it and pin it to taskbar:
    Windows 8

    Good luck.

You're talking about Win7 factory image? Then Yes it also happened to me and I ordered the image on DVD's a while back.
That was about 25 Euro from HP's site but depends on the manufacturer. Right now it should be cheaper.

Any Windows DVD is ok or, like Kizo said, put the DVD files on USB stick and it works faster.

1 more question - I was adding Shutdown/restart/lock/logoff Tiles to the Start menu, but I can't find the shortcut for Log off.

These are the shortcuts I have:

    Shutdown - c:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe /s /t 0
    Restart - C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /r /t 0
    Lock - rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation
    Log Off - ???

    Hello Newcdn,

Just noticed you mentioned you were able to do a "clean install" of Win8 Pro from Dreamspark - can you confirm that the Dreamspark license allows a clean, non-Upgrade installation?

    Thanks!

Of course it allows a non-upgrade installation. You can do a clean install of *ALL* versions of windows, including upgrade versions. However, you do have to have an existing version on disk for upgrade installs (but you can still wipe out the old install and do a clean install).

If you mean, can you use the dreamspark copy to install to a computer without a previous os, then yes. It's a non-upgrade version.

Thanks Mystere - yes, I was wondering whether you can use the dreamspark copy to install to a drive without a previous OS. I am adding a new mSATA boot drive to my laptop and want to install the dreamspark copy to that drive (while having pulled the existing HDD with Win7 already installed to avoid any conflicts).

    I appreciate the clarification!
