RAW picture file support in Windows 8

    Hi,

I am trying to be able to see CR2 files (RAW photo files from Canon) as thumbnail icons in Windows Explorer. I am using Windows 8.

Microsoft's codec pack (Download: Microsoft Camera Codec Pack - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details) does not work for Windows 8. When I am trying to install it, I get an error message mentioning that I can use Windows 8 Update function, but doesn't give any more information on how to do this exactly.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Simon

Kind of a long shot, but have your tried running the installer in windows 7 compatibility mode? If not, you're kind of out of luck until win8 comes out with the final public release.

I was unable to get the latest version of the codec pack to install under Win 8 Enterprise Trial. The WIn7 compatibility mode did not help.

The previous version installed and ran properly. However, it didn't support my newest digital camera.

There's a work-around. Install the previous rev of the codec pack. Download the current version. Extract the .dll files from it (7Zip, open source, works.) Over-write the old .dlls, which are located:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Microsoft Camera Codec Pack\MicrosoftRawCodec.dll

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Microsoft Camera Codec Pack\MicrosoftRawCodec.dll

(You'll have to re-name the X64 file to match.)

I'd prefer not to use hacks of this sort, but I wasn't prepared to wait for MS to release a version that supported Windows 8. I wonder whether they'll do it before GA (26 October).

    Hi,

    Thanks for the reply.

I think I will probably just go with a 3rd party codec pack. This one here looks pretty good. FastPictureViewer Professional | A Fast 64 bit Raw Image Viewer for Windows 7, Vista & XP.

    Thanks again,

    I'd forgotten about that.

15 day free trial, $15 for the codec pack, full Windows 8 suport - looks very good.

I would go for UFRaw + gimp. It's a solution that's actually free, though it's not as seamless as some of the other options. Though, if you've taken raw images, then you probably want to edit them.
