    Windows 8 Search

Apologies in advance - I'm sure this has been covered, but I can't find it by searching the forum.

In Windows 7, let's say I want to find everything I've got on my computer about my daughter "Karen." I type "Karen" in the search box and I get it all - e-mails, Word docs, Excel docs, pdf file, photos that have "Karen" in the file name or are tagged with "Karen," etc.

The search box in Windows 8 requires me so tell what I'm searching for - Apps, Settings, or Files. I type "Karen" and select files (I know I don't have any apps or settings called Karen, so files seems like the logical choice since I'm forced to choose). I'm not getting e-mails (I'm not using the toy app that is part of Windows 8 - I'm using Outlook 2010 - is that a problem with the search?) or photos. I don't want Windows to force me to narrow my search to any one type of Windows "thing" (app, setting, or file) - I want everything. Hey, I might even have written a program and called it Karen - I want Windows search to return that, too. How do I get it to do this? I've read all these articles about how incredible Windows 8 search is compared to Windows 7, but so far all I see is a limitation. Can the kind of search I want to do (and can easily do in Windows 7) be done in Windows 8?

Unfortunately, Windows 8 does not suport unified unified search like windows 7 did. You will have to decide ahead of time. Also, the search cannot search inside desktop apps, so you will have to search outlook manually.

Ok, scratch one thing I said - I do get the photos if I pick "Files."

However, I've got another one to add - what about searching for folders? I'm sure the notion is that searching for folders is considered passe or obsolete since you can find any content you want by searching for the file itself. But here's an example: I am a consultant and I keep all of my invoices in a single folder called "Invoices." It's buried a few levels down from My Documents and sometimes I forget the path. I want to see all of the invoices I've sent to Client X in 2012 to make sure I billed every month. In Windows 7 I can find the folder by typing Folders in the search box. How do I find it using Windows 8 search?

Thanks. I posted again right after your post hit. Is there a way to search for folders in Windows 8, as I asked in my subsequent post? Should I install something like Copernic? (Is it compatible with Windows 8?)

If you just want to search for a folder, you can open an explorer window and search from there. Searches initiated from explorer windows rill return folder results.
