Aero has never hit my hot-button. Since I don't see it in Win 8, I don't miss it a bit.

I do like the OS itself, and have sorted most of the issues I had with it.

But the CP on the other lappy looks SOOOO much nicer....the RTM is
    painfully ugly by comparison.
Already tried one of the glass programs ("Transparent glass.exe" saying glass on the icon, version 3.3.0) and it's not working: it gives the text the window border colors, somehow it's expecting Windows transparency to be available (but it's not).

What I don't really like doing is replacing the aero.msstyles from RTM with the one on RP but then the uxtheme files would block this theme and we'll need one of those notorious patches (not sure if they work correct here) and maybe it will work again. I'll see in a VM if it works or not.

    Note:
Anyone who wants to test something crazy like this should do that in a VM and not messing their real system.
    Good news!

You can get the RP Aero-look in the RTM without patching any files.
Just replace the Aero folder in the RTM with the one from RP and it works.

Do the replacement from outside the os (tested and recommended method) or take ownership (didn't tested this, chances are not to work because aero is constantly used, try end task of dwm.exe and/or themes service).
Do a reboot and see the new theme.

It seems to be pretty safe to apply: RP aero files match the RTM without patching. Metro Start Screen works normally.

Tested in a VBox Win8 RTM VM: (x86 not tested but should be similar)

    Before: (original RTM aero)
    Attachment 9017

Then replacing the whole aero folder in the Resources:
    Attachment 9018
rebooted with a pe cd just to make sure the replacement works without issues:
    Attachment 9019

    After: (same os)
    Attachment 9020

    @Kat & Co.
    Problem solved.

    Cheers
    Hopachi

Don't know. But it doesn't actually work.

Well, it does insomuch as it gives you the wallpapers etc.

    But it DOESN'T restore transparency.

    And THAT'S what I want.....

Windows 8 may get Aero Glass back via modder - Neowin

Could this be what you're looking for?

Just the ticket, if they ever release it.

Ivo & the boys should incorporate the option into Classic-Start.

    They'd make a killing.....

It's possible but I didn't try that. If you already know the procedure try that.

Oops! You also need transparency. I should have mention that you don't get that. Sorry for that.

But in general, it works: you get the window borders back.
The transparency is hidden somewhere else, Aero just runs what it has to run.

We are on the same boat.

I just try to help people with aero-issues. It's just that the window borders looked better in RP and they work in RTM.
There is also a window shadow that works again with the RP aero + the window title (black text) that gets a slight halo light (not as much as Vista/7 Aero but significantly better than none in the RTM).

Personally there's no need for transparency and such, but it would be better if available for the people that used it a lot.

Got the AS5735 sitting next to this as I type.

At present it is running (thanks to the sysimage facility in 7) its original
early-2010 install of Win 7 Ultimate.

And this (8 RTM) looks SOOOO bland in comparison, it makes me want to chunder.

An OS is like your wife or your car.

You spend a LOT of time looking at it, so why get an ugly one?

I spend 16-18 hours a day in front of this.

    I rest my case.
