For Desktop, you might need a third party app to do so. I'm not too sure if that is available. As for All Apps, take advantage of the Start Screen. Pin a folder, pin an app, pin a hard drive, or pin a Desktop app onto the Start Screen and arrange and enjoy! :D

"Classic menu", has an option to go to the desktop. You can also use this "hack" which takes you to the desktop,

WinAero: Skip Metro Suite (Skip Metro suite)

but you will then need to download and install a start menu, if that is what you are seeking.

Both of these work in the RTM.

But I would recommend the previous suggestion to try and organise and use the Metro

Not really. If you eliminate the stuff you don't use too often, and organise the columns, it becomes a graphical menu.

It started early in the Windows 8 discussions on different forums, and has since been oft repeated (hackneyed). But take it easy on new members

Well, I don't mention it anymore....but I still don't care for it in the least.
You know what, I don't have an issue with people not liking it. It's just the constant misinformation that's starting to drive me nuts.

Anyway, to answer the OP, one can always place the Desktop tile as the first tile. That way, all you have to do is press "enter" when you log on to the computer, and you will be taken to the desktop.

I understand what you mean by that.

I don't like it on a desktop machine - and I don't use it.

I don't feel disposed to use win8 as my main o/s.

If I was using a tablet - that would be different.

use Start8, the best replacement I have ever used

Me neither. That's why I use Skip Metro Suite to do the job. This way things can be enabled or disabled partially or entirely by choice.
Then it's up to Classic Shell for the button.

We'll see what Stardock is up to this time. Charging something for a menu-only app doesn't smell good because there are (many) other free alternatives out there.

Yep, Tihiy is doing a great job.

Inexplicably, some people still want to use the start screen / NCI stuff from time to time - they just don't don't want it shoved up their rectums.

I think Ivo is cooking something up....
