    - Press alt+F4, or
    - Bring your cursor to the top of the screen and drag it down until disappear.

Both will close the apps and do no harm to it
Or have time to read this Tutorial

    Hope that helps

You can't really close the desktop app, as any desktop programs running will remain running. Doing the drag down will stop the desktop from showing in the metro multitasking switcher.

The method suggested by Kevin does, indeed, close the process. (ring your cursor to the top of the screen and drag it down until disappear.) It is the method I use and, at least works for me. Check it in the task manager if you doubt it, it takes a couple of seconds, but then does close..

If you are looking at the Task Manager you are on the Desktop because it is not a "Metro" app. So the Desktop isn't closed at least while you are looking at Task Manager.

The desktop itself is not a metro app, but the way you interact with it *IS* a metro app. This is a sort of desktop "viewer", much like the remote desktop client. So when you close the desktop app, it doesn't exit the desktop, it only closes the window to interact with it, much like clicking the X on the remote desktop client.

If you have more than one monitor, then the desktop is also present as a non-metro app on the second monitor.

Just realized if the OP meant "desktop" not metro.

If referred to it, pretty sure most people know how to do it. Except some resident apps appearing on (hidden) taskbar, need to click on the most appropriate menu.
