How do I close program and exit to Metro UI?

How do I close program and exit to Metro UI?

When I exit / close [any program / application] I am presented with the old Windows 7 Desktop. Old W7 Desktop is the default when I close a program -- even if I started the program from Metro UI. I wish to see the Metro UI when I close any application. I do not like the extra keyboard press of the Windows key. How can I change W8 such that I default to the Metro UI when I exit [close] any application?

You can click on the lower left bottom corner of the screen to go to Start, move your mouse pointer to the top or bottom right side corners and hit Start. To close an app, move the mouse to the top of the screen, a little hand appears. Click, and then just drag it down.

    It's quite fun.

Thats a bit strange. Many will fancy that, what for you is a problem. Anyway, Microsoft wants us to use metro and therefore the default is set to the metro start screen whenever we close any application (metro app only, closing desktop application won't take you to the metro start screen), unless you have tweaked things with 3rd party programs. Have you installed any 3rd party software that brings back the start button or something like that? If you have, uninstall that.

    metro app only

1.) When I exit any Microsoft Office 2013 Professional application -- When launched from Metro UI, I get dumped back to the desktop -- Not Metro UI; 2.) I have many programs -- not Microsoft Apps -- that I use regularly and I launch from Metro UI. When I exit any program -- I am dumped back to the desktop. 3.) I have experimented with launching a Metro App -- the exiting -- and I always get dumped to desktop. Please tell me how I can default to exit to the Metro UI. Thank you. David

I didn't know closing apps leads to the Desktop...

Your best bet is to close out the Desktop UI the same way to close and app (you can't have maximized windows or otherwise the mouse pointer doesn't change to a little hand) and close it to Start.

Or, you can just click on the Start button on the Charms bar or lower left corner.

I also use the Start Screen as the app launcher for the Desktop.

When you close a desktop app, you stay in desktop. If you really want to get all existential, you can think about the desktop as an app, and desktop apps as sub windows of that app. You have to close the desktop app to get back into metro.

It would be nice if that worked all the time. Most times I have to hit the Windows key plus C. I've hovered the mouse all over the place at times but it simply has a mind of its own. Sometimes it works and other times it does not. It's not a big problem for me but it should be more consistent.

You've complained about this before, are you sure there isn't something wrong with your mouse? I've got a pretty old laptop I'm using W8 on and it's very consistent and responsive.

My mouse is OK. But, I got to thinking about it and I have it installed on VMware as a virtual machine. Maybe this could be the problem. So I'm curious, are the ones having this problem have it installed as a virtual machine? I think that the fact that is installed as a virtual machine could have issues of its own.
