Solved Windows 8 Pro x64 FINAL

Hello All,
New guy (to these forums) but wanted to join as I just got the final version of 8 (Pro x64) installed this weekend. I am having some trouble with it so I figured I would probably get some good tips here or be able to give some tips out. As far as who I am; the name is [infectionzero] and I run an IT dept. at a very large retailer. They just started transitioning to 7 last year!!! sigh... Anywho, I pinned this site so I'll check it quite often. If you have questions about the final version of 8 that I can answer, please feel free to post.

I was hoping however, that someone could point me in the right direction. I upgraded from 7 to 8, used a local admin (even though 8 wants you to use a Microsoft account now) and then transitioned to an @live.com account to make browsing the new store and apps easier. My issue is those pesky Admin Permission pop-ups. WinRAR won't extract to certain locations (e.g. Program Files) so you have to extract, then copy/paste and provide your blessing. Annoying when trying to configure an OS. If this is the wrong section, please forgive but I figured I would get the intro/offer answers/pose question knocked out in one post. Thanks all!

Edit: In case the question arises of how I got the final version already. Students who have access to the MSDN Academic Alliance page (Now Microsoft Dreamspark) have the download available. If you are in school with an account for the software library, go check it out.

Add the Authorization Manager to the MMC console and dig around through that. I had an issue with the Hyper-V connection terminal (not the manager, oddly enough) and user rights, even though my MS Account was an admin on my Win 8 Pro install.

Regarding WinRAR, give 7zip a shot!

I'm going to guess you have User Account Control disabled, if not, do so. I use WinZip but I've never tried extracting in the Program Files folder before...

Also, the Start Screen is HIGHLY malleable to how you tend to use Windows. If you're a Desktop user, which I know you probably are, by default Windows 8 doesn't have many Desktop items pinned to the Start Screen. A simple but VERY useful tip, right click on a folder, Library or hard drive/network location and hit Pin to Start. You'll find at the end of the mosaic of tiles, a new tile appears of the shortcut. Then, you can drag and drop and group those tiles together.

Here's an example of mine, I have ALL my Libraries, a few Desktop locations, and some metro apps. On my second screen, I have my games and utilities and such. It makes Desktopping easier and faster than 7!

Start key and C pull up the Charms bar, Start and I bring up the Settings Charm.

And welcome to Eight Forums!! :D

Kebero,
Thanks for the reply. The Authorization Manager add-in shows no information for me and I would need to create an XML list to give programs rights. I would have gone that route, had I not figured out the issue prior to coming back to update.

Two things wrong.
1. TrustedInstaller was the current owner of my root drive (Windows 8 upgrade fault?)
2. Even though I had full rights to the root drive, certain child folders had Administrators listed as no rights except read so I couldn't modify by right clicking (Odd).

To fix, Disk Management > Right click on %rootdrive% and go to properties > security > etc and make sure that Owner and access information was passed to all child objects. Odd issue but all seems to be good now and programs I open have no issue.

Regarding 7zip: I have the install somewhere, but it's extremely rare that I encounter a 7z file. I typically find those more when I boot into Kubuntu. I'm not opposed to 7zip, and it is a great utility, I just find more use out of WinRAR and have been using it since I made the leap to XP...

Coke Robot,
Good assumption, bad target. ;)
(UAC died shortly after install, secpol.msc configured to kill the UAC 'agent smith's', regedit double check)

I've actually been trying to completely sever my ties with ye old start button. I use RocketDock with specific docklets to get to programs and then just Hotkeys and Run commands for everything else. The only time I open Metro (after immediately closing after login) is when my son wants to play fruit ninja :D

Edit: Sorry for the double post

I used to use the Start thumbnail on the traditional bottom left corner, but with some practice, I use the ACTUAL new Start button on the left hand side.

Three things:

1) I feel rather silly for not even thinking about inheritance of permissions. I really should have known to check that.

2) My experience with 7zip on Windows has been better than with WinRAR. 7zip handles all the same formats and feels a bit more flexible.

3) I've been hitting the Windows key so long that I can't remember the last time I actually clicked on the start button.

Kebero,
1. Don't feel bad, I do this crap for a living and I missed it myself for about two days. I saw the permissions were wrong a while before I went into Disk Management but kept looking for a setting in the new OS... "It can't be that simple..."

2. I know many who prefer 7zip over WinRAR with good reason, just used to it I guess.

3. I've always hated that stupid menu! Since 95 I've been trying to make things more easily accessible. Started with Quicklaunch / Various desktop customization software packages into XP, then I started using the "Pin to Start Menu" feature in Vista. Eventually found RocketDock and have been trying to 'hide' my start button since!
