No, windows 8 by default won't playback DVD's. You have to get the Media Center addition, which isn't out yet, or you have to get a 3rd party DVD playback software installed.

I assume by 90 day free, you mean the Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation. I just read today in Wikipedia, "Windows 8 Editions", that "Windows 8 Enterprise provides all the features in Windows 8 Pro (except the ability to install the Windows Media Center add-on), with additional features to assist with IT organization...".

So if that is the version you're running, then you CAN'T install the Windows Media Center add-on. Not sure how that affects DVD devices?

I just put the Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation, AKA the 90 day freebie, on my Samsung Slate this evening. I wasn't planning to install Media Center in the near future. I'll have to wait until 10/26 I suppose. My slate has a 128 GB SSD drive, not much storage, so I'd need an NAS drive to store any signficant amount of video.

Power-DVD works just fine.

I have ver 9 on the 32-bit machine, and ver 10 on this.

Both work on Win 8.
