Why does Ms have such HIDEOUS graphic designers.

Hi there
why is it Ms's designs these days couldn't be WORSE if they tried to do the most horrible design they wanted to.

Messing about with the Spider Solitaire application -- apart from the full screen thingy (real annoyance in most cases) it seems that the whole game seems linked to some stupid XBOX live which I don't really want anything to do with and the cards themselves were almost unreadable --especially on the "Wild / Old West" theme.

As an example of how this has regressed -- here's the Spider solitaire version from XP (yes XP) -- easy to read card designs -- options to change the decks and number of suits easily available and it's WINDOWED so you can play it while doing something else at the same time. - This version runs "Stand alone" on W8 if you've got the XP install disk -- SPIDER.EXE == doesn't need an install.

I think this old simple design is STREETS ahead of the "New" Xbox related POS with the most unreadable card faces I've ever seen -- and as for the "Modern" theme -- looks like the pictures have been scraped of old Toddlers "Reading Blocks".

Anyway here's how I prefer playing spider solitaire.

Cheers
jimbo

I'm not questioning your preference of not being Xbox enabled or not wanting to play full screen, but aesthetically I find the new version to be similar in look, cleaner, more realistic and definitely not hard to read in comparison.

Yeah,..... Metro apps are not resizable..... Some poeple are going to figure out they can't play spider solitaire and pretending to do some work on an Excell spreedsheet at the same time. LOL. .....Starting to see the disavantage of Metro....

Compared to the other graphic work they've done this is probably the least offensive. The biggest issue is not being able to pretend you are working while playing solitaire but we wouldn't do that.

Actually, I find metro apps like games are better than windowing them whilst trying to look busy. Generally, you'd be on the Desktop working on a spreadsheet, and with a click on a the top left corner, you're right back in a game. Bossman comes over, a click back. There's nothing on the Taskbar to show visibly that you're goofing around. :D

I dunno, Jimbo, but something has gone wrong in Redmond. This ugly flat and colorless GUI idea seems to be infecting everything, including the presentation on their websites. We've spent years refining the GUI so it's colorful and multi-dimensional in appearance and now this crap? Take a look at Office 2013 and Visual Studio 2012. I played with VS2012 for a little while and came to the conclusion that they've lost their minds up there. Maybe the lack of sunshine they get in Washington is responsible. Whatever it is I want no part of it. It is going to be easy, at least, not to part company with my money for any more upgrades to my software.

FWIW: My take on the generic graphics in windows is for the LCD (Lowest Common Denominator) graphics machine.
This way Everyone can see it, without having to have a high power graphics card.
I agree that it would be nice to have different resolutions of their graphics but that's like trying to push a piece of string.

Precisely. Dumbing down to suit the non-desktops. Power reasons etc...

Btw, that is an awesome string quote. Gotta use that sometime.

Exactly Cokie
Glad you pointed that out :D. Many are unaware of those "magic corner" stuff and thats the reason they are complaining.

Well, I guess they're trying to cater to people who are still running CGA, then. Graphics performance on these machines ceased to be an issue even on basic machines eight or ten years ago. You only need top-end graphics performance for games anymore.
