The download of the Enterprise RTM (64-bit, 90-day trial) is nearly complete.

I'll be trying it both as an upgrade and as a stand-alone install.

Liked the CP, had major issues with the RP.

I'll give the RTM a go, that's only fair.

But I'm primed to be disappointed.

I already know that I loathe the 'new look' of 8, and have already
worked around/ignored the Metro screen (thanks, Ivo...) and am
waiting with bated breath for a decent Aero skin..

The game-breaker, for me, is whether it will run openGL and/or
DX9 games.

If so, great.

If not, it won't be lasting long.

Back in the days of GEOS on the C64, I dreamed of an OS that would
do everything that I ever wanted, simply by a mouse-click ( I use
single-click, and really can't understand those who don't).

That OS was Windows 7 Ultimate. I've been running it since the beta, and
have never had a problem or issue with it.

SO FAR, Windows 8 doesn't come close. We shall see....

Why it should not run dx9 games?
Aero skin not possible, because blur is removed and for now, cannot be restored. Seems like MS removed code for it.

Win 8 CP and RP would NOT run older DX9 or openGL games.

My GeForce GT555M may as well have been an old TNT2.

To ME, that's a game-breaker (no pun intended).

And anyone can/could/will write the code for an Aero add-on.

Look at what Ivo and others have done to return the Start Orb/menu to Win 8.

An Aero add-in CAN be done, and almost certainly WILL be.

Maybe because, its easier??

Aero is there, just not the blur, transparency can be enabled, but it looks messy, but if you are interested to try yourself: then regedit.exe HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM ColorizationGlassAttribute, set to 2 and then kill dwm.exe in task manager.

But as I said, blur cannot be brought back as just yet, I know few guys who have been trying to port it from RP without any success.

I would imagine DirectX 9 gaming is still supported. At least for me, I have a DX9 game installed that runs more flawlessly than 64 bit or even a 32 bit VM of 7.

So far I've only tried Diablo 3 which is a DirectX 9 game and another MMO game that is cross platform and uses Open GL and both run just fine on a GeForce 465 (I think) with the Windows 8 CP and a proper nvidia driver installed. Have not installed them on RTM yet though...

DX11 is backwards compatible with DX 9. But sometimes "Stupid Installers" (or launchers) [tm][pat. pend.] will refuse to install without an exact version match. In that case, the game will need a fix (That is really a bug in the game) to work. Or you can hand install the DX 9 runtime.

I've seen that that can fail for some people, you may need to enable .net 3.5 which is built into Windows 8 but disabled by default in the programs and features control panel before the DX9 installer will work properly.

Finally, you may have to run the game with windows 7 or even XP compatibility mode from the short cut (Or set it on the real game .exe if launched from a launcher).

Installing in VirtualBox now.

It won't upgrade over my Win 7 setup, and I've no desire to spend all day reinstalling software.

So, I'll play with it in VB, and decide whether to do a standalone install later or not.

Hmmmm. Where to start...?

OK, installation and setup went without a hitch, and it synched fine with my Hotmail A/C. The
installation was quite fast (faster than either the CP or the RP).

The first thing that struck me, even though I'd expected it, was how PLAIN and bland it looks.

I really do hope someone writes a decent Aero skin for 8.

Performance, even in the restricted landscape of V-Box, is more than adequate. And it feels less
'fragile' than earlier builds.

As yet, I haven't added Classic-Shell, am playing around without it for now.

So far, the only issue I've had was not the fault of Win 8. Once I installed the V-Box guest-additions
and rebooted, the Metro screen went into a continuous refresh-loop and could not recover. A quick
wipe and reinstall without the additions soon fixed that.

The App Store has improved hugely, and I haven't had any IE lock-ups yet, unlike the RP.

And I like the improved functionality in File Explorer, the copy/move facility, and the new Task Manager.

I have not tested any games here in V-Box, but will be doing a stand-alone install sometime this week
(as time permits) and will test its gaming capabilities then.

Verdict: - Yes, I can use this, but I want SOME eye-candy back (as in the CP, for example). And I
will be installing Classic-Shell. I CAN use the Start screen, and am doing so ATM. But I do prefer the
old Start Orb/menu.

Hmmm.....Ok....

Not an actual Windows issue, but very funny...I emailed myself a few wallpapers etc using my Hotmail
account, as it's a quick and easy way to get them into virtual-Box so I can use them here on W8.

When they didn't show up after a day, I went looking. Found them in the JUNK folder.

Along with a swathe of emails pertaining to Win 8.

And every last one of them from Microsoft.......?????????

:confused::huh:

Aero skin not possible, because blur is removed and for now, cannot be restored. Seems like MS removed code for it.

Well, using Hyper-V Manager, in my Windows 8 RP, I changed my theme to aero on my regular desktop and the theme in the VM changed as well, but not aero, it became an outlined version, such as the high contrast themes in RP and CP.

OK, we're still alive, and have been having some fun (???).

The 64-bit RTM (Enterprise) is running well in V-Box.

After yet another futile attempt to install the 32-bit RP on the AS
5735 (CPU not compatible?) which is 64-bit-capable, I gave up on
that and decided to try the 64-bit RTM.

Wasn't having a bit of it! Wouldn't even read the disk.

So, I tried the 64-bit RP, which virtually FELL onto the HDD!!!!

Not particularly wanting the RP, I restored it to its original Win 7
Ultimate setup, then re-upgraded it to the 32-bit CP, which it loves.

BULLET-BITING TIME....

Have now sys-imaged this thing (Win 7 Home Prem. 64-bit), and have
installed the Enterprise RTM trial (64-bit), as a stand-alone.

Still looks bloody horrid, but is running well, so far. Nothing installed
yet, but will be doing that later.

More to come.......stay tuned.

Well, I've finally found the time to install my programs and apps.

Power-DVD 10 takes care of the lack of DVD playback nicely. WMP
with the K-Lite pack takes care of everything else.

Nothing I've tried so far has had any issues either installing or
running. The Start screen is still a PITA to organise, and gets
worse the more progs you add.

So far, I haven't installed any OEM drivers, but Win 8 seems to
do a fairly good job on its own. Certainly everything works as it
should, but I'll play with the OEM drivers later. I haven't tested
any games yet.

TBH, this has been one of the most trouble-free installs that I've
done for some time, and is streets ahead of the CP/RP in that
reapect.

I just wish it LOOKED like the CP........

More later.

Yeah, saw that, CR....:)

Anyway, the OEM driver issues are still present.

Most work, but the casualties include Bluetooth, Intel
graphics (OEM) Wi-Fi controller and USB3 controller.

The Nvidia GeForce driver installed OK, but I'm not
holding my breath as to how it'll perform in games.

Time to trawl the h/w manufacturers' sites for updated
drivers, if any. This machine is only 6 months old, so
obsolescence isn't an issue.

But then, 8 isn't the first OS to have ropey driver support initially....

UPDATE: - The Enterprise RTM 64-bit SMOKES.

Still using ClassicShell, but am weaning myself onto Forget-ro and it
does work IF you know how to tweak things to your tastes.

Al the openGL issues were fixored using the Nvidia 301.42 drivers.

On a GeForce GT555M, these seem to be the only ones that work, and
they do give full openGL compliance.

Hope this helps someone...:)

I still think it's pig-ugly, but am ignoring, rather than accepting. Roll-on
an app to restore transparency.

It's getting better as I tweak it, and as I get more used to it.

It is far from perfect, and in many ways Windows 7 is a 'better' OS.

But this effort is NO 'Vista' or' ME'. Both of which I run with NO
issues, apart from ME not liking modern hardware.

I have a Pentium 3/800 box with 512mb RAM, and a GeForce 4.

It was built specifically to play older games and run older
operating systems. Which it does. Beautifully. Including ME. (I
reckon people should appreciate ME for what it WAS, rather than
bagging it for what it WASN'T).

is the P3 old? ..... feck, yes.

Obsolete? ..... no, not yet, ask again in 2020.

Useful ..... No, except for minimal tasks and is (not quite) useless
for modern games, but runs most older games that Win7/8 won't.

But that's what I built it for. it works. And it works very well.

But I do this for fun. To me, a new (or old) OS is like an old text-
adventure-game. The fun is in the journey, not the arrival.

Still no luck getting the RP or the RTM going on the AS5735, but it
LOVES the CP.

Go figure.....

**EDIT: - Going to try the 32-bit RTM on the Pentium 4 over the week-
end. This could be interesting. I'm predicting serious sound and graphic
issues with the SB Live! soundcard and the GeForce 5700FX.

It was enough of a struggle trying to get the old girl to run W7 Ultimate,
but she ran Vista just fine (and still does). Drivers were/are the issue with
the AS10 then, and more-so now, as she was built originally as an XP
machine. runs the 32-bit W8 CP beautifully, though.

Beta-tested Vista on her, actually, but getting W7/W8 drivers for the old
hardware can be a bit hit-and-miss at best.**

More to come...stay tuned. This will get interesting soon, I think.

Had the 64-bit RTM (Enterprise...that must be the talk-screen version.....but no....) up
and running for 30 of its 90 day lifespan.

Love it!

BUTT....

The CP (NOT the RP) is a far better looking OS than the RTM..

Just as stable and fast (it is) but with 'lippy' on.

I'd SNAP up an OS that worked like the RTM, but looked like the CP.

But this RTM is un-killable. Rock-solid. 7 with a supercharger....

No brainer, and you CAN use it with a mouse. Just like 7.

Easily. Piece of piddle, as we say over here in Australia.

'Can't' use Win 8 with a mouse/keyboard? Just like 7?

'Can't' be 'productive' in Win 8?

Gotta be something wrong with you....cos it isn't the OS.
