No Hierarchical Containment / Navigation - Huge Mistake By MS

OK I've been using 8 RTM now for a week or so. I have learned the navigation techniques and grouped my tiles and unpinned the ones I don't want. I believe I am now using it as intended.

I can't get over that there is no navigational containment hierarchy short of zooming out from the all apps screen. There is no way to contain and drill down.

What was Microsoft thinking? A flattened hierarchy for organization is not how humans work. I have drawers for tools, food and clothing. I have files for papers. I've got cabinets for dishes. For cryin' out loud fundamentals of my language are based on classifications with hierarchical associations.

I have to lay out all my program icons grouped next to each other on a big screen? How does that help me navigate to what I want to do? I don't get it. Parsing through hundreds of icons looking for words that are difficult to read for programs that I don't remember the name of in groups that I've forgotten the order of is not efficient. Remembering abstract titles or categories and drilling down to what I need is natural and efficient.

Windows 8 will bomb I am afraid.

Hierarchies don't work well with touch interfaces. It's as simple as that.

Disagree. Works great on phones and tablets. Use it every day.

Really? Is that why iOS has a single flat screen of icons that you can page between? With no way to organize them hierarchically? Is that why Android has a single flat screen of icons that can page between with no way to organize them hierarchically? Is that why WebOS and ChromeOS both have flat pages of icons?

Tile groups are supposed to take the functionality of folders. They to a terrible job of it though.

And because everyone else has a crappy phone interface that MS has adopted for the desktop that means it's the right way to do it on the desktop?

    Nuts to that.

To the OP: maybe you should make your own abstract groups. You can create and title groupings on the start screen, as well as pin folders, etc.

Those icons are folders. They provide hierarchy though be it only one level. Pages of folders in essence provide another level. I don't see any for Windows 8.

I've noticed many comments relating to the All Apps screen being too large with too many icons/tiles, meaning the user has to scroll for miles to get to the right-hand end. This turns many off using it, instead of the Start screen, as a Start menu, despite it being arguably far superior. Limited...
