    Search screen broken?

Hi all, new to the forum and looking forward to becoming a contributor myself. I need to survive the first few days of Win8 myself though!

I just performed a refresh of my MSDN RTM copy of Windows 8 and my search screen (from the start screen) is dumbed-down now - i.e.: when I go to the search screen it only searches on apps and does not provide the filter UI that should be on the right-hand side.

Is there a setting somewhere or did my refresh actually break Windows?

    TIA!

Sure - I'm at the office right now but I'd be glad to this evening. It also seems that search functionality within applications does not work. Clicking search in most if not all applications results in nothing

    Hello Jake,

For now, you might see if this may be able to help any.

    Search in Windows 8

    Hope this helps,

Shawn, thanks for the link. Unfortunately I can bring up the search screen but it's broken. These aren't screen grabs from my PC but are photoshopped and close enough. You can see that the search pane is literally missing - this is the case in any app that supports search as well. Interestingly though, I can still type to continue my search, but only on the Start screen will that actually work. I feel like the search functionality might be corrupted on my machine but I just don't get how, since this was literally a refresh from last night, and search worked before that. Thanks again though!

Ah, I see now. Are all of your flyouts like that, or just the search one?

It looks like you may need to do a reset instead.

Good question - are settings considered a flyout? If so then it's just search, settings pops up fine. Sadly, this wouldn't be an issue had AVG not removed part of IE the first time, which is what caused me to do a refresh. I'll give the reset a shot (I would assume that would have to fix it) this weekend hopefully. Still got everything backed up so another install won't kill me.

For some background I did an upgrade from Windows 7 Pro, hence the presence of AVG. Don't make the same mistake I did by keeping your AV installed during the upgrade process!

Yeah, those bars that pop out from the sides are consided flyouts. I hope it goes smoothly for you. Please let us know how it went.

So... I got home to check things out further and it's working now. No reboot (that I'm aware of, comp was running all day but I remoted in so I couldn't tell if it was locked or logged out previously). I also noticed that the news app is showing updates now whereas previously it only said "News".

So I wish I could provide a solution for others who may bump into this but I don't have one, other than wait a while and see if it fixes itself. My theory is that the search flyout isn't available until the system performs a round of indexing. Since the first time I used Win 8 I had performed a Win 7 upgrade, perhaps it was able to use the previously-generated index. That would explain the lack of search functionality after a refresh.

Odd, but I'm happy to hear that it's working now for you.
