Solved Technet+ Download and Keys

It appears like the Win8Pro download requires a MVL keycode. Which does not show up on our MVL site yet. Yet when I get keys with Win8 it lists the keys as Win8Pro retail??? Only keys for Win8 Enterprise Preview show up on our MVL site.

If I install the standard Win8 (en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.iso) and use on of my 3 technet keys will the result be Windows 8 Professorial?

Thanks for any advice?

My Technet license gives me the Pro key - OK it says retail but so what? It all depends on your membership what you are entitled to. The download simply states Windows 8 DVD x64 or whatever but it's the keycode that gives you the type of Windows 8 and that information is in the 'Product Key' area.

If you hit "detail" next to the one you want to download it says:

This file contains multiple products. Please refer to your product keys to determine which products are included with your subscription.

And when you get your key it will show Windows 8 Pro.

So yes the file you downloaded will install Pro with that key.

Just a few observations. We have a MVL account at our agency and recently Win8 MVL downloads and keycodes appeared on our MVL site. We always used the MAK key as our agency is more aggressive then the rest of the state moving to new OS etc.

I used the MVL x64 ISO today and as I expected, it did not ask for a keycode to install. All went well until I went to add the MVL MAK key. It has some default key present only showing the last 5 digits but it would not allow any new key to be added. I then loaded the Win Pro MVL from the Technet site and tried that. Same issue ...would not allow changing or entering a valid keycode. The bad news with no keycode is you are locked out of personalizing the profile and other issues until a Keycode is entered.

I then tried the Enterprise off our MVL site, same issue. No ability to enter a keycode so it runs non-activated.

I choose to then use my Technet Win Pro. instead of the MVL Win Pro. Will just reuse the keycodes. By accident, I had the Technet Win Pro install files loaded on my USB install media and when I tried to enter the MVL MAK, it would not accept it. I will try tomorrow to see If I can change the Keycode for this Retail Win Pro to the MVL MAK. My guess is it will not work.

If anyone has any advice to get the MVL ISO version to accept a valid MAK key post install (does not let you enter a key upon setup)....it would be awesome.

I don't know why it is the way it is, seems almost like a bug to me but you can do it through an elevated command prompt using the following commands:

To enter the key

slmgr.vbs -ipk YOUR-ACTIVATION-KEY-HERE

To activate it

slmgr.vbs -ato

RobR is correct. You have to either run

slmgr.vbs -ipk "your key" or
slmgr.vbs -upk < This is for uninstall product key. After this, the GUI option to enter your key comes back.

it seems MS baked in a KMS key and made it far less obvious how to utilize a MAK key.

I decided to Google this issue after I posted and ram across a few other with the MVL Key issue. They noted the same option you noted above. Thanks for the help. I was going to try the install script using our MAK on the Retail Pro install but decide to just redo the box with the MVL iso so it is all happy.

Thanks again.

Hi there
?????
Can't understand the problem -- it's SIMPLE.

Your subscription - Professional level -- you get Windows Enterprise R8 (1 VL key) multiple activations -- doesn't require a Key to install -- afterwards if you don't have access to a KMS server use the commands in this forum to enter the product code -- activated -- done -- you'll get around 500 activations minimum on a VL product.

You also get Windows 8 PRO (3 Keys)

download the key you want to use and enter it at install ime -- what's the problem.

(these keys can be activated around 10 times each).

TechNet standard - you won't get Windows Enterprise but you will get Windows Pro 8. I think 2 Keys -- these are also activatable 10 times each.

What's the problem.

Note if you signed up to TechNet after middle of July this year - you are required to stop using the software if your subscription lapses. Subscribers before that can continue to use the software. -- Here again Lawyers at work but that's the current deal.

Cheers
