Wow. Just loaded Windows 8 for the first time. I'm speechless. This is quite a change in the user interface. This is going to frustrate a lot of people. I'll work with over the next few weeks but my first impression is not good.

I use both Windows and OS/X. I don't understand what Microsoft is thinking.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, worth a post?

We are going to see THOUSANDS of posts like this and tens of thousands for the hundreds of weird, hidden and frustrating new UI elements in the coming months. The UI is such a gut punch on first look that people HAVE to post about it. (Probably not really realising that thousands before have said the same thing)

This is a new OS, if you try it without comparing to any other OS you won't be disappointed. BTW, welcome to the forums and enjoy.

I've written a lot about the many interface failures and poor design of the-interface-formerly-known-as-metro (TIFKAM), but after installing RTM and trying to look at it fresh, I just have to say the first impression is beyond horrible. I have no fewer that 5 live tiles on my start screen, continuously updating themselves with uninteresting, limited information. One of them says "Paris, France" at the moment, and I have no idea why. I don't understand the point of showing a headline every few seconds on the news and sports tiles. How often really are you going to catch something that interests you? It's just a frustrating distraction. When I click "Music", I get a bunch of pictures labeled "Now playing" with Mariah Carey, Will.I.Am, Beanie Sigel, and others that are never ever "Now playing" in my house. I see nothing has changed compared to the previews, and I'm even less interested in this OS than before. What I've seen on the desktop makes me not want it anywhere.

Right click on the tile, hit turn live tile off or unpin from start. Problem solved.

I know you can do that. It's not the point. The point is, Microsoft thinks this is what people want, and first impressions count. Having to immediately undo the primary thing Microsoft is slinging at you is not good. And the live tiles are the least of the problems, as they can be turned off or removed; they're rather like traditional crapware that comes with new computers in that respect. The others I talked about in my last message and in past posts are inherent design flaws, and the best solution for them is to avoid Windows 8 altogether.

I don't gadgets on my Desktop, so I don't use them. It's something I don't care for from Microsoft but I don't say it's an issue for me.

Live tiles display bits of relavent information like a new headline. It's not supposed to display a whole article.

OK Spent some more time with the interface. Once you start to understand the navigation actions the experience improves greatly. I am still trying to figure out hierarchy. Flattening everything doesn't improve usability in my opinion. The START menu provided hierarchy. Can I pull tiles into containing folder and then navigate into them - that would be cool. The clutter on the screen is very distracting.
