Win 8, so long, been a trauma to know you....

    Windows 8 Enterprise 64-bit (7 Ult, Vista & XP in V-Box)

    That's my guess, Cluberti.

Probably be solved once Nvidia extract the digit.

Not a huge issue anyway, as I have more than one laptop, so
it's easy enough to run 7 on one and 8 on the other.

My poor, overworked, over-hotted Pentium 4 desktop contains
multiple hard disks (about seven of them!), each with its own
OS and software. They range from a DOS 6.22/WFW 3.11 setup
through W95/98, ME, XP Pro, Vista (!!!) and the Win 8 DP. Oh,
and there are a couple of Linux distros as well. I'm looking for
an HDD SMALL enough to install PC GEOS on (I have the OS).

    Anyone here remember GEOS?

I really am spoiled for choice when it comes to operating systems.

ATM, Windows 7 is king. But, once you diss Metro, and replace some
of the lost functionality, Windows 8 is certainly a contender.

It's just a shame it LOOKS so bloody ugly....

Well, looks are personal - I've used Win8 as a daily driver since October, and I find I can't easily go back to the Win7 UI anymore. I learned to really like Win8, once I got used to it and forced myself to unlearn 17 years of how to use the UI.

OK, after an abortive attempt to install the 32-bit RP on my AS5735, I restored
the original Win 7 Ultimate setup from a system image.

The RP insists that my CPU (Core 2 Duo T6400, 2Ghz) isn't compatible with Win 8.

This despite the fact that the SAME system LOVES the CP!!!!!

    My dilemma.....

    1. Keep W7 Ult?

    2. Re-upgrade to the CP, which the system loves, knowing that it cannot run the final build?

    3. Haxor the CP to keep it alive as long as poss?

Oh, BTW, the 64-bit RP has proven once again to be an unstable piece of carp, so I'm
back on Win 7 on this machine, too.

I'm d/l-ing the free RTM trial, and will give it a fair go, but I am not optimistic.

This goes well beyond Metro. Love it, hate it, bypass it, not an issue. Don't care? Up
to you. Personal taste, and all that, y'know..I boot past it, but access it AS NEEDED.

The DP suxored, I doubt anyone would argue with that (still does, actually, I have it
in a VM). And I've tried the 64-bit RP, which is so crash-prone as to be a joke.

The RTM looks so bland, when I saw the first s/s I thought I was looking at Vista with
all the eye-candy turned off (and that WAS horrid).

    I WANT my Aero back. I run a high-end 2nd-gen Sandy-bridge i7 with plenty of RAM
and graphics (GeForce 2Gb) and refuse to accept that performance is, or should be, an
excuse to remove it. Just be good boys, and put it back.

I use ClassicShell and QuickLaunch, and, from THAT POV, Win 8 is great.

I just wish they'd released the CP as the RTM. Bugger $49, I'd pay full-price for a
smoothed-over CP. It worked No BS. A few driver issues that will/would be sorted
anyway, that's it. And BOTH my machines like it.

Certainly for 64-bit machines, the CP wins hands-down, so far, and, as I said, my
32-bit lappy LOVES the CP (but won't even RUN the RP).

Wouldn't take the RP if it was free (OK, it was, and I did, but the point remains).

    Utter rubbish.

For me the RP is the most stable so far and is rock solid on my particular system.

It's so good I don't want to mess with the RTM yet not to mention that no aero and no gadgets is a deal breaker for me.

I plan on keeping this RP going long as possible.

Yes, the RP has CPU issues with certain Intel CPUs - I'd download the Enterprise Trial or a copy from MSDN / TechNet (if you have a sub) and see if it installs. The CPU issues should have been fixed prior to the RTM release, and of course would be included in the RTM bits.

Thanks, Cluberti, am d/l-ing the RTM (90-day trial) now.

Will take a few days, as I am currently 'shaped'.

Will give it a 'go' soonest.

That's the version I have for my C64.
