RTM is ugly as heck

Just installed the leaked RTM. No aero glass. Inactive windows are gray. Taskbar is transparent, but there is no blur. I can post screens later, but it's much worse than the RP.

If any other people here are interested in helping me fix this, and have some skillz, we should try to work this out.

I would be interested in anything to make it look beter.

Best of all would be get that metro stuff out of the way.

I just want inactive windows to not look like industrial waste, the taskbar to blur properly, and windows to correctly transparentify.

The problem is so many of the issues are still there. Even though this is already the final version. The scroll bar is ugly as before. close minimize buttons aren't done well. No full screen button. Jarring 3D iconography/graphics against super flat ugliness. This issue probably can never be changed. Unless, the cut off backward compatibility. Old programs and probably even programs today will not want to use completely flat icons to represent their program. They usually at least use 2.5D graphics. Personally I like the metro idea because I appreciate simple design but the execution is severely lacking. It doesn't look simple and clean it just looks like they didn't try.

This is going to be a disappointment for the optimistic hopefuls. There is no change, or customisation, available for the Metro. Only thing is, by default, there are not so many icons showing, which gives you the option to load it up as you see fit.

Metro.jpg

In my case, I also found that ye old Classic menu did not do it's thing automatically, and go through to the legacy desktop. I had to load it manually into the "startup" folder. I am using the Metro as a menu, so it didn't bother me too much - just curiosity.

Early days, but other than that, no mind blowing changes. I did think it booted up a tad slower.

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.
I kind of like the look of the RTM Desktop. It's different, almost like the reverse of vista's Desktop. I especially love the window control buttons, ABOUT TIME!!!

@Cokie

MS clearly want everybody on win8.

Don't you think it odd they have deliberately chosen to make it divisive - in appearance and functionally.

Very strange , as they keep talking about the user experience.

They don't seem to get it at all.

I'll add on that the blur-less transparent taskbar is awful, because the stuff underneath shows through too much. It would look better non-transparent than the way it is now.

Ugly? Really?

My first thought was "Damn, it's beautiful, I will never go back to Windows 7"
Then I tested BF3 and found at it didn't work, whimpered a little, rebooted to Windows 7. My first thought then "Damn, this is so old and horrible comparred to Win 8 :("

(My friend that sat next to me reluctantly agreed with me ;) )

Hi there
It's quite easy do "de-uglify" W8 -- just put your thinking caps on.

Now if we could completely KILL METRO that would be something -- I use W8 with the classic shell installed anyway so Metro doesn't bother me now as much as it did before I installed classic shell.

cheers

First and most awful: The transparent taskbar has no blur. That means text below the taskbar shows through completely crisply, and depending on the colors, can severely reduce readability of the taskbar text.

Second: Gray is awful. I never, ever, ever wanted to see gray again after 2003. Now what were they saying about "dated and cheesy"?

Third: No glass. How much more distracting and in-your face can you make a UI. It's a freaking solid ugly bright color. Glass blended with whatever was beneath it, so it didn't hurt your eyes.

Windows 95 can probably be skinned to look exactly like this windows 8 UI. That's not a good thing.

Sharp corners are mostly a matter of taste, and I actually like those.

Hello!

I recently installed Win8 in VMware to give it a try.
I'm trying to decide if the upgrade option is worth it.
I'm not sure if a "support consideration" has been discussed, but my 2 cents.

Right now it doesn't look like it's worth it to upgrade to Win8 as my primary HTPC OS for many of the reasons already mentioned.
But it may be worth it as a secondary OS for the learning experience, knowledge gained, and ability to test things on my PC before making changes for someone else.

I installed Vista when it first came out and it didn't work for me.
The initial driver issues killed it for me as an HTPC OS, so i uninstalled and went back to XP.

I now regret not having a Vista system.
When i help someone that uses Vista, it's more difficult for me.

I still have an XP install and that comes in handy if I'm helping someone using XP.
It's a pita for me to maintain XP, but it still has one purpose.
I can test things on my machine before making changes to someone else's PC.

I first wondered how anyone using Win 8 can easily run anything not on the default Metro screen.

I found the thread http://www.eightforums.com/general-discussion/2355-windows-eight-keyboard-shortcuts.html and appreciate all that info.
Thank-You to all for that help and info.
I'm not sure if this Win8 approach and remembering all these keystrokes is really for me.

I found Classic Shell mentioned in this forum, and that may make Win8 usable for me.
I don't like needing 3rd party apps to make a system work.
I believe they just add to the possibility of more issues, and i prefer a more "Vanilla System" for stability/reliability.
But again, thanks for that info!

Just getting started testing, learning, and using Win 8 !

I am installing it as we speak so I can see the RTM for myself... I am quite nervous and exited at the same time.
I'll make sure I take plenty of screen shots :)

This is how my desktop looks most of the time. Very cluttered ..ehm I mean busy!

But I agree! The new Metro look on the desktop is really ugly compared to Windows 8 RP. I miss the soft shadows behind the windows, the glass effect on the title bar and the smaller border padding. The border padding is very big and bloating away a lot of screen realestate. I haven't found a way to reduce it like I can in Windows 7.

It really looks like Microsoft wanto marginalize the desktop. Just look at the thin black up button compared to the one in Release Preview.

Fourtenately Windows 8 seem just as lean and fast as release preview rendering the desktop at a smooth 120fps :)
